When you have customers that ask for water to drink, do you view them as being cheap, and write them off as bad tippers? Or do you even notice?
12/1/2011 7:14:45 PM
As a customer, I usually help offset the savings in getting water by putting it back in the tip if the server is good.
12/1/2011 7:15:55 PM
12/1/2011 7:17:21 PM
I usually ask for water so it doesn't interfere with my tastebuds. Some foods just do not go together with soda, etc.
12/1/2011 7:17:54 PM
I used to view it as an opportunity to ask "would you like still, sparkling, or taaapppp waterrrr" while making a disgusted face while saying tap waterabout 50% or more of the folks would ask for bottled waterthen my bill got $2-3 higher
12/1/2011 7:18:02 PM
Actually nvm. I usually get asked sparkling or not. Annnd I know this is an asshole thing to do but thread on serving and:
12/1/2011 7:19:06 PM
only tacky restaurants bring water to the table automatically
12/1/2011 7:20:47 PM
Being part animal, I require water to live.Being a human, I enjoy water with my meal.If bitches be trifling over what I choose to drink with my succulent meal I just take it out of their tip.I'm not going to start drinking out of the sink in the bathroom just because some lazy waiter thinks he can read his customers.Hence the old feedback loop that moron mentioned.[Edited on December 1, 2011 at 7:26 PM. people go out to restaurants for two reasons: 1) to be entertained and 2) to do shit and get shit that you can't get at homeget your water fix at home, cheap motherfuckers. drink a fancy cocktail or a good microbrew when you go out
12/1/2011 7:27:51 PM
I tip 35% on every water I order.
12/1/2011 7:28:03 PM
I order water with every meal regardless of my other drink options. It is rare that I order water only, but it is not uncommon for me to drink far more water than soda or beer.I might get one soda refill and three water refills with a normal meal when I eat out. Both refills are cost-free, but I choose to drink more water than soda.I feel like I really enjoy the sugary burn of the soda when I drink it like that.Or a crisp draft beer.It compliments the meal when it is a luxury rather than a necessity.[Edited on December 1, 2011 at 7:32 PM. but but but....I can't get good beer or cocktails at homeoh wait...Actually I can.In fact, I'm pretty sure I can make better cocktails than you'd get at the vast majority of the cheap ass restaurants around raleigh.
12/1/2011 7:35:35 PM
Ok so don't go to cheap ass restaurants.
12/1/2011 7:37:45 PM
but you don't have all of the individual ingredients to make a good cocktail at your house

Does Harris Teeter and the ABC store have all the ingredients I need to make good cocktails at my house?

To the person that posted about my major - I do nothing related to my major, so if you're trying to say something about what I make, that is an awful assumption. Not really sure where you were going with that, but if it had to do with money, I'm pretty sure I make more than you do.And I usually tip 25-30%We get water because its healthier than any other drink on the menu[Edited on December 1, 2011 at 7:49 PM. Fuck all of you haters.I'm going to tip your ass. Stop being fucking cheap, get a job that doesn't worry about tips. I want to eat somewhat healthy by cutting the calories of my meal so fucking be it. I quit drinking soda for whatever fucking reason at the moment.I tip at least $5 even if my meal was only $12.

whenever I had somebody order a water, I would think to myself "this gentleman or lady clearly cares about his or her health. who am I to judge?"hydration is underrated

12/1/2011 8:02:08 PM
i drink water, beer and the occasional mixed drink. if i'm not drinking alcohol, then water it is. i don't drink soda or tea, so my servers can suck it if they don't like it.
12/1/2011 8:10:50 PM
^. I honestly never really thought about being judged as cheap for ordering water.

These days it seems majors have no bearing on a career. I'm in IT and there were actually two other history majors I worked with in my group at IBM.I asked the original question because the other day we were at a restaurant (nothing fancy, just macaroni grill) and the waiter kind of gave us this look when we ordered water.
12/1/2011 8:50:48 PM
More often than not, I just get water when I go out to eat.why?I fucking love water. I gulp that shit down all day, everyday. I quit drinking soda all together, and it's just as easy to drink water. Healthy, cool, refreshing water

ordering water wasn't what made me think people were cheap. it was the people that split one entree and ordered 5 baskets of breadfuck those guys

12/1/2011 9:55:36 PM

lol ddk i've been there... or the people that order the bread and just two appetizers.... the large but cheap ones
12/1/2011 9:57:05 PM
this isn't a tipping thread
12/1/2011 9:57:58 PM
I always order water when I go out. Typically I do order a beer after, but in some cases I do not. But like some others have said, I need to hydrate while eating. And while sodas taste great, they do very little for hydration and take away from the flavors of what I am eating. Also, in some cases I will order water only so that I can spend more on my meal. Maybe include an appetizer to share. And I waited tables for 8 years. I tip 18-20% everytime unless you are an asshole.
12/1/2011 9:58:09 PM
if they order water with lots of lemons and sugar, when you have lemonade on tap ... then you know to write that table off .. and it happens quite frequently
12/1/2011 10:03:15 PM
somebody got fired back in the day for bringing this susta a glass of water (no ice), a whole lemon (uncut) and a saucer with a huge pile of sugar on it
