it's an interest, not an obsession. as for the things that are awful, I see plenty of blame to go around in all corners of society. i'm hardly indifferent. i'm just trying to look at the entire puzzle instead of being hypnotized into a 1 dimensional view of the world.

i have many interests. i'm a curious person. i like to know how things work. my brain is wired to think in terms of systems. my main interests are math, physics and technology. but most of my early adult life my interests became more centered on advancing my career so I could make money, pay my bills, start a family and enjoy the life of prosperity and flourishing I aspired to build for myself and the people I cared about. that was the system I cared most about understanding. tww and the community here was another system I cared about. even though the topics in TSB were also of interest and I was curious enough to read it regularly, I didn't post there quite so much back then bc I didn't consider myself as well informed or opinionated as many others. Plus, it tends to be a pretty toxic place and I prefer to spend my time on things that create more joy in the world.

as the years went by and I had more bandwidth to think about things that interested me beyond just the next paycheck, I spent more time trying to better understand my self, as old men tend to do. during my time at State I had convinced myself that Christianity was true and had lived that way for a long time. After I eventually came to my senses and had moved on, I was left to wonder how I had convinced myself wrongly about something so important, when I should have known better. But the damage had already been done and the trajectory of my life was irreversibly altered.

so as far as my interest in Islam goes, this is why. there's nothing devious or hateful about it, as I suspect that you imagine. it's merely the outcome of a curious human with a particular lived experience. somehow along the way islam became part of my life and despite my preferences to spend my time on math, physics and technology, I have decided it would be wise to spend some time to better understand it and the people who believe in it. the good (that video is about wisdom, if you failed to notice) and the bad (its brutal totalitarian and apocalyptic dimensions for example)
