^Winner

^^If you are speaking Italian, then by all means, say it the Italian way. If you are speaking English, pronounce it like its supposed to in English.

Stop trying to act all sophisticated. I seriously doubt you pronounce all foreign words like they are said in their native language.

Well I grew up around NJ/NY Italians and they pronounce things that way, especially when talking about food. It's most likely an Americanized version of Italian with local inflections. They might even say it differently in Chicago, Philly, NY, etc.

Same in my mom's family. My mom was born in this country, but her first language was Italian. Even I say certain words (not just food) with different inflections.

1. I don't have a "cause"--I simply offered an opinion.

2. I never indicated that Rachel Ray is hot.

3. This is what I actually posted:

Quote :
"Rachel Ray > Giada De Laurentiis

When Giada turns sideways, she looks like a gremlin."

4. Learn to read and comprehend.

A lot of Latin Americans will do that. They'll be all normal, but when you ask them where they are from they will say their country with all types of accent and flamboyancy.

I only hate it when people say mexican names in a spastic spanish accent
other than that i'd rather hear the authentic words as much as possible
remember, its italian food, the point is to experience the culture,

My Indian friend does it too. Even funnier is when he's speaking in Gujarati (his native tongue) and he throws in American words like street names or business names, it'll sound totally American as if it were dubbed. Pretty hilarious and I always call him on it.

Pretty sure most ESL people do this, and it's not a pompous thing, it's just how they learned the word first. I can see how it would anger you, but if you think about it, it's what makes sense to them.

Isn't that chick's show "Simply delicioso"? I'm sure she doesn't say delicioso like an American would.

Not the same, because queso has an english translation. If they said quesadilla in a mexican accent I wouldn't have a problem with it.

Mozzarella is a word in both english and italian, so being an italian she says it with an italian accent.

BTW, concerning the accent thing, it's really a matter of whether to switch from lax alveolar English to tense dental Romance pronunciation and back or not. There is no "right" answer.

From the book Word Court:

Quote :
"There is no international standard pronunciation for names--either personal or geographic ones. (Think of Paris, whose denizens call it 'ParhEE'; think of Mexico, whose citizens call it 'MAYheeco.')"

Quote :
"[The Chinese]. . .I am told by a native speaker of Mandarin, tackle Tchaikovsky (one of several possible romanizations of that name, effected according to a common and consistent, if unintuitive, system of transliteration) by rendering it with characters that appear as 'Cai Ke Fu Si Ji' when spelled according to the Pinyin system (itself an unintuitive romanization) and are pronounced something like 'Tsy-kuh-foo-suh-jee.'"

In 1990, there was even an SNL skit about this issue titled "NBC News Employees" (can't find video):

This is the trooth. The Italian dialect you hear in the Tri-State Area is far from the dialects you'd hear in Italy.
