well i'd love to bartendbut as you've already told me in pm i've got to work my way up to that
5/18/2008 3:44:38 AM
Well especially if you've got no service experience, I can't imagine any place would put you behind a bar. You can't even get a job waiting tables at a decent restaurant without some experience, so you'll probably have to start at a chain or mom n' pop's type place. I'd go with a chain, it sucks ass at times but the money's ok and you can usually work your way up quickly.[Edited on May 18, 2008 at 3:48 AM. Reason : dsfaf]
5/18/2008 3:47:21 AM
well yeah i wouldn't expect them to put me behind the bar right away coming in with no experiencethat would just be stupidbut yeah i went to 4 places today between lunch and dinner2 weren't hiring but gave me applications2 were and both of the managers i spoke to seemed to like me so... that seems goodi'm heading to at least 3 tomorrow
5/18/2008 3:49:42 AM
man when I quit Ruby Tuesday and just needed a job for a minute to pay the bills, I went to On the Border and they hired me on the spot, started orientation the next day I think

5/18/2008 3:57:35 AM
honestly i'm kinda tired of the US when it comes to jobs...seems like most jobs are retail or service industry jobs...2 sectors i hate....seems like europe would have cooler shit
5/18/2008 3:59:30 AM
hmm oh welli've got some places tomorrow to trymy aunt actually knows the owner of one of them and my cousins waited there during highschool so... that might help^you're gonna find the same thing over thereand there are more jobs in america than you'd thinkthere is plenty of opportunity to work, especially if you have an education, same as over in europe thoughmy uncle waited tables at night and worked at his dads company during the day to make ends meet(nothing was given to him) when his dad died he took out a rather large loan from the bank and bought the company from his mother[Edited on May 18, 2008 at 4:04 AM. 5/18/2008 4:05:51 AM

i've had a job for 2 weeks nowand i have clocked 0 hours.pretty short on $texas.
5/20/2008 7:06:15 PM
i wouldn't go with a chainbut that is just me and my experience. people that work at nonchains don't like to hire people from chains (in my experience). they have to "detrain" the chain people. i dunno, i'd find some place local. if you look on craigslist there are ALWAYS places that are hiring and are willing to train. you could probably work at some place like the village draft house w/o experience (maybe??? i dunno, maybe someone on here works there). i got my first waitressing job w/o experience and worked in a bar that wasn't a chain and i made a lot of money. i wouldn't go for applebee's or outback or something. i dunno. but there seem to always be places listed on craigslist that are decent (esp more bar type places) that are hiring and will train you. i'd try those before a chain
5/20/2008 10:18:28 PM
It's not that difficult to get one and you will make fairly decent money even at shitty places and even more money if you can get at a place that is decent or good. I would probably just tell them you're taking some summer classes during the day (I would avoid mentioning this is a job you're going to be doing for only 2 months). If you dine or frequent bars a lot then you know how you want to be treated so you need to transform that into how you treat your tables (some tables will fuck you, so have paitence because others will make up for it). Specific training will consist of learning the computer system and the menu (I would start studying menu's of the places you are trying to work and/or the place you've been hired asap). On the UPS issue, you will make a hell of a lot more money waiting tables then doing ups and you will work less hard. UPS is beneficial if you can handle hard work and plan to do it part-time while in school (not just a summer job) to earn free tuition, health, dental, and vision.

^ I agree with you and when I worked as a waiter for a very short time (six months at age 18) I took that approach. A simple greeting, keep drinks/booze full, be paying close attention (but not annoying), and don't make them have to ask for things they should already have.Fuck people who want you to act like you went to school with them and punish you if you aren't all up there ass (unless you're at a very nice place were this is assumed to occur and you are paid well for it). Bartenders who want better tips should chat it up with the regs and people who come in during slow time (especially if said person is alone).[Edited on May 20, 2008 at 11:58 PM. Reason : .]

I actually just put in an application there yesterday. Along with about half of the stores in Cameron Village. I need a job so fucking bad. I'm so bored.
5/24/2008 1:49:48 PM
^ Are any of the stores in cameron village hiring?
5/24/2008 1:55:46 PM
gg parsonsb
5/24/2008 1:59:53 PM
Seemed like a couple were. I think the Village Deli or whatever it's called on the corner next to the Moe's place was hiring. A couple of others. There's so many stores there that it seems like at least some of them would be hiring. I only went into food places though. I don't think they'd hire me at all the old people stores there.
5/24/2008 2:01:01 PM
I put in a couple/few years at applebee's on hillsborough street. they really will hire anyone with no experience. and when i worked there, you could actually learn some of the other crap and get out of the front of the house some if it was burning you out.actually, after i started waiting tables, i got stuck in it for a long time. but it really is this easy to go get a job at most places: except AZ... Tuscon, AZ during the summer is like atlantic beach during the winter as far as the job market goes, except on a huge scale.
5/24/2008 2:47:51 PM
oh, and i just saw your applebee's story. i passed the happy apple trainer test or whatever, and was a certified trainer. i've personally seen them dick lots of people around about orientations and when to come in to train, etc etc etc.i would really try to keep the same trainer the whole time, or you could end up totally lost. and if you're not working day shifts, i dont think you should pull any "5 shifts in 3 days (day/night/day/night/day)" training... cause its totally different. but those managers make themselves appear so busy, they will let you slip through the cracks.(its not that its really hard, it can just get very stressful on a saturday night when you have no idea what you're doing..)]
5/24/2008 2:51:57 PM
got my first day of training done todaypulled a double shift to get 2 days out instead of onemanager was surprised i came in today given that my house burned down the day before (told her i might be late to my second shift, she asked why) and tonight was surprisingly busy, so i ended up running food a drinks through the dinner and lunch rushbut i've got table placement down, and most of the other stuff they wanted me to have down by today down, as well as some extra stuff that i had to learn to help out todayand jesus christ whoever invented tredsafe shoes is a saint, i've never been on my feet for 12 hours and not had them hurt before
6/1/2008 10:44:20 PM
not hard
6/1/2008 10:47:56 PM
I got a job on the spot with no experience when I started working as a waitress. It might depend where you are trying to work.
