^thats an interesting point, im nto gonna be the jackass that turns this thread into a political debate

but these lobbyists and activists think they are speaking for everyone when they say "Bush's War" and "bring our boys home from this pointless war" when it simply isnt true. They are speaking for themselves and at the same time completely discrediting our soldiers ability to think and decide for themselves

some of these men believe in what they are fighting for, some dont. but dont go around spitting bullshit about how this war is total bullshit alot of guys dont believe that and guess what? they have a better perspective than you.

^ I agree. Since the war began 5 years ago the vast majority of people in the military have made the decision to enlist or re-enlist. Most of my friends in the service still believe in the mission.

One out of every eight soldiers gets stop-lossed.

I know that's not a lot, but that's not exactly a vast majority that automatically "re-enlists." Although I'm sure some of them might be perfectly fine with going back...I know I sure as fuck wouldn't be.

Moody...words cant express enough about your lost. I cant imagine what your family is going through and while reading your message it made me think of my younger sibling who will be flying off to fight in Iraq in September 2008...

I pray that the rest of the men/women in your cousin's unit stay safe, and while I whole heartedly DO NOT support this war, I will forever be in support of our troops and I hope the military personnel over there are able to stay out of harms way. Im very sorry about your loss Moody.......

thanks everyone for all the support. my aunt and uncle aren't doing well at all, but hopefully things will improve in time. it's a bit comforting to me to know that he went down fighting and it wasn't some random fall off a humvee type thing, but at the same time, knowing that a week earlier the EXACT same base was ambushed makes me question things.

if that's a strategic point, i understand, but if it's a makeshift, mobile "war room" type of a thing, that bothers me. my boss is a ret. pilot and explained some of the reasons why that can happen and how it will be filed as a lesson learned and all that stuff, but it's a bit frustrating.

hopefully everyone can get home soon.

just got off the phone with my dad.

11 days.

pruitt was 11 days from coming home, had already packed his bags, and just had a new motorcycle delivered to his nana's house because he was coming back to live at fort bragg. that makes me sick. 11 stupid days.

I can honestly say that I'm lucky enough not to have any family/close friends fighting right now. I feel for anyone who has a loved one over there or has lost one over there. I couldn't begin to imagine the feelings that you must be going through. God bless.

"Sources: Slain soldiers didn't get full intelligence on Taliban force

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- An Army unit overrun at a remote Afghanistan outpost didn't get enough intelligence that 200 insurgents were in the area and poised to attack, two military officials told CNN.

Nine soldiers were killed Sunday when Taliban insurgents overran an observation point but failed to breach the main coalition base near the village of Wanat in Kunar province, which borders Pakistani territory where Taliban militants are thought to operate openly.

The Pentagon has begun a formal investigation into why adequate intelligence failed to reach the unit, military officials said Thursday.

It was the deadliest attack on U.S. troops in Afghanistan in three years, underscoring how the conflict is escalating."

I am sorry about your cousin;

but your cousin had a choice. Your cousin did not have to join the military.
I thank your cousin for deciding to do so, and all others who have made that choice.
May fortune be with your family during these hard times.

"Cpl. Pruitt A. Rainey, 22, of Haw River, North Carolina, also joined the Army as a means to pay for his college education so he could become a teacher, according to Jeff Terrell, the leader of the youth group at the Glen Hope Baptist Church.

"He wasn't going to be a career military guy, but he believed in what he was doing," said Terrell, who knew Rainey since his teen years. "He felt like this would help him. He enjoyed it, but he had other plans.

"He really wanted to teach. He had a good way with kids. Kids flocked to him."

Before joining the Army, Rainey spent his time doing martial arts, a pastime that came naturally to the high school wrestling star, and volunteering for his church's youth ministry.

"The kids loved to jump on him like he was a big bear," Terrell said. "He was a big kid, but he was gentle.""
