nobody has any intent on changing what you eat, only giving you the option of being informed on what you eat.

^^What have you been reading, or who have you been talking to, that convinced you the only role of the government is protection from inside and outside dangers? I think you're getting federal government and local/state governments confused.[Edited on July 16, 2008 at 5:33 PM. Reason : ]

Giving you the option of being informed at whose expense? Why should restaurants have to pay to enforce a law to help people that should have learned to take care of themselves already?
7/16/2008 5:33:32 PM
Why should food packaging companies be forced to pay to do tests to find out caloric information and put it on the back of their products?

I've been reading about laissez-faire capitalism. Basically, it entails a complete separation of church & state as well as state & economics. Additionally, the governments only function is to protect its citizens from force or fraud internally and externally. Fraud includes things like libel, force can come from another country in the form of a war or in the form of a criminal breaking into your car.

There isn't much hope for you. The hope that you do have? It lies in pursuing a philosophy degree to post-doc, with a concentration on economics, and hoping to god that your research/writing stipends and TA-ships put a roof over your head. After 15years in the field, you might can publish a book on your ravings that most definitely won't be the next Freakanomics (at least, not with your current stances)]

^^^^See, here's the main problem with the theory, as far as I can tell. Things cost money, obviously. Almost everything that can be done or made amounts to some amount of money. When someone gets a crash, doesn't have on their seatbelt, and dies as a result, that has to be paid for. The person may not be dead, and the hospital will have to give the person treatment. The person may or may not have insurance. If the person did die, they may have damaged someone else's property, or killed someone. But they're dead, and they can't pay for that. Now what?Speed limit, seatbelt law, whatever - same principle.[Edited on July 16, 2008 at 5:49 PM. Reason : ][Edited on July 16, 2008 at 5:50 PM. Reason : ]

see above, but I am totally for this. Some people will of course ignore it and just eat, but it will help plenty of others.I asked a couple people at work yesterday where a nice, healthy place was near my work- I had to take some pretty healthy/fit people to dinner. Our 250 lb admin recommended a Chinese buffet and was dead serious. "All the dishes have vegetables". Her husband is 40 and has diabetes.

Alright, so I went to TGI Friday's site to see if I could find the "Pecan-crusted Chicken Salad". For the life of me, I cannot find any nutritional information about it on their site though.http://www.thedailyplate.com/nutrition-calories/food/tgi-fridays/pecan-crusted-chicken-salad Found this site though that states it is only 750 calories (no mention of dressing), but half the calories are estimated to be from fat.And most of the other sites I came across agree that it's ~700-800 calories. The only mention of 1,300+ calories is from a recent reviewer to the above site. For those watching their weights, I would love to see the information readily available for them. Not them having to decide what they're going to have for lunch the day before as they search multiple web sites hoping to find one (several sites I ran across only had twenty items from their menu) that actually had information about the item they were interested in on the menu.

Why wouldn't the restaurant want the information readily available so that there were not any misconceptions?Probably because they know it's going to look bad either way.

so this Vix person read a few things on laissez-faire and now is an expert and knows how to solve all the worlds problems? hahahilarious

As a person who looks at the nutrition label on nearly everything I buy in the grocery store I see this as a positive thing. Customers can still choose whatever food they want, but at least they know the consequences of their choices.I recall probably 7 or 8 years ago I grabbed a salad at Chic-Fil-A with ranch dressing. About half way through the meal I noticed that each packet of dressing (they give you 2) had about 20 grams of fat. I might as well have gotten a sandwich and some fries. Some people may think it is common sense that ranch dressing is bad for you, but for people who have no nutrition education and have no idea what it is made of it really isn't that obvious. How are you going to be angry about being better informed? Ignorance is bliss for some I guess.

Was that salad with or without the dressing. I can't imagine its without and the chicken breast was around 800-900 cals.
