Just from a few minutes of reading up on aortic dissection, you will find that it requires extensive testing to diagnose prior to the fatal event. I believe that any young person could have gone into the ER with or without insurance and had it missed.

I am terribly sorry about your cousin, but he could have had the very best of care and still have died from this.

I know a hell of a lot of people that bitch about how they can't afford health insurance yet have plenty of money to piss away at the bar, on drugs, on vehicles that are more extravagant than what they need for transportation, etc. A lot of people in this thread who bitch about not being able to afford health insurance and want a government handout fall into this exact category. Hopefully they will look at what happened to your cousin and be able to learn from it and realize that they need to look into health insurance.

It's not the hospital's fault that your cousin had no way of paying for more elaborate tests. They admitted him and checked for simple things. They went through the trouble of putting a catheter in him at least.

My son has a fatal genetic disorder that many of TWW's regular posters are aware of; especially since his doctor was just on Good Morning America, Nightline, and in the N&O. And what is "wrong with his face," is a cleft lip - the most common birth defect in the world and one of the many manifestations of his disorder. Only an idiot or an asshole would have to ask.

people that blame the person for not having health insurance are assholes. you don't know their financial situation. and just because someone can get bcbs in nc for $100 a month doesn't mean that is the case all over the country. i looked into getting a plan similar to what i had in nc (that was $120 per month) in pa, and it cost $300. that's a lot of money for someone working paycheck to paycheck. just because you know people that have cell phones and expensive cars but no health insurance doesn't mean that is the case for everyone.

First,I am so very sorr for your loss.
Secondly, a x-ray would not have helped since it just shows bones, if they wanted to do an xray, they are idiots. the correct thing to do here is a echo of the heart. It would have caught it. If it took him another day without surgury, surgury would have given him a better chance. Sometimes these things take seconds, sometimes days -depends on pressure, where the tear in the aorta is etc. Also he should have been complaining of chest pain in his back. if so they should have gotten on this right away, no matter his age. This has nothing to do with buying health insurance or not, just sounds like some crappy doctors.
also, I cannot figure out why he could not pass urine. that one is strange.
