By the very existence of the death penalty with our current justice system, we are putting innocent individuals to death. People are exonerated who are on death row on a regular basis. If even one innocent person is put to death, that is one person too many.
7/29/2008 12:05:28 AM
But with our current DNA system..there's a mUCH better chance of putting the appropriate criminal behind bars as oppose to the appropriate criminal to death for doing some atrocious crime. Now DNA is not perfect but it's better then what they had 50 years ago..which was he said/she said!

Even if you get it right a majority of the time, I still do not believe that it justifies putting an innocent person to death.

Do people who dont live in the Bible belt region make some of these same arguments..Id be really interested in getting the veiw from some New Yorker, or some person from Montana, or someone from Arizona or California.... Bible Thumpers and politics is starting to drive me fucking crazy!!

^^I always thought most Bible-thumpers were in favor of the death penalty. Hence why a huge majority of the executions happen here in the south.[Edited on July 29, 2008 at 12:16 AM. Reason : ^]

7/29/2008 12:16:38 AM
I <3 the death penalty, it's one of the things I miss about Texas. They don't fuck around with all this touchy-feely bullshit.
7/29/2008 12:17:05 AM
Like seriously and honestly born and raised in Pitt County???Where?
7/29/2008 12:17:30 AM
Does anyone know if NCSU has ever had any alumni who have ever had to receive the death penalty..im just curious..since we're on this topic...?

Born in Guilford county, grew up in Pitt County(as in lived there for 15 yrs).

Conley c/o 2000.
7/29/2008 12:30:09 AM
Ahhhhhhhhh you went to Conley....the differences in the Greenville Rose crowd and the D.H. Conley crowd..that's a post which will get it's on thread..hehe that's a 4 page topic in itself....
7/29/2008 12:31:34 AM
7/29/2008 12:31:35 AM
I am soon to be 27 years old and the differences between Rose and Conley mean very little to me at this stage in the game. I am not even sure that they are rivals in the same way anymore now there are other high schools in the area.

lol Rose and Conley...There are many, many things worse than death that we could do to prisoners, depends on what your idea of inhumane is.
7/29/2008 12:44:02 AM
slightly off topic but our sentences for crimes are the longest of those of industrialized nations. Other nations have lower crime rates AND they put their criminals in jail for shorter jail time.
7/29/2008 12:44:37 AM
ok i didnt feel like reading this whole thread so...maybe you guys have changed topics but....the death penalty is too easy. a guy this bad needs to be locked in a room alone...with the families of his victims.
7/29/2008 12:48:23 AM
7/29/2008 12:52:01 AM
well, not really addressing your point but our long jail times is a result of the fact that the public vote for judges. Hence, judges that are or make it look like they are tough on crime get elected. This is the reason our jail times handed out are higher than other countries. Other countries have judges appointed by an elected leader such as governor or whatnot.
7/29/2008 12:55:47 AM
^ That's just a causation confusion.
7/29/2008 12:56:00 AM
isnt the crime rate greatly reduced in the countries in the middle east that...cut off your hand when you steal and stone you to death for adultery? (my spelling may be off a lil...)it seems to be working over there...
7/29/2008 12:58:02 AM
didn't anyone go to school? eye for an eye came from Hammurabi's code-the first written code of laws. nothing new in oh say the last 4000 years.[Edited on July 29, 2008 at 1:09 AM. Reason : mmm][image][Edited on July 29, 2008 at 1:24 AM. Reason : sdhf]
7/29/2008 12:58:54 AM
^^^, I'm not sure what you mean by that? high jail times are electing judges?^^, come on, do you really want to live in that sort of society? And iirc it's not the penalties that cause lower crime rates, it's societal influences like all the fucking violence on TV and shit that makes us have such a viloent society. Someone please help me out here if you know more than I do. I suck at this sociology shit.[Edited on July 29, 2008 at 1:02 AM. Reason : .]

-a huge part of the reason i'm in the profession i'm in is because i want to make the world a better place by killing people who are fucking it up.-i'm generally pro-death penalty, but it isn't a hot button issue for me.-it has been argued that even if we accidentally execute an innocent person occassionally, we gain a net preservation of innocent human life by snuffing out murderers (taking into account people killed by murderers who escape from prison, kill inmates or guards in prison, etc).-i think we should introduce some personal responsibility to the process...maybe have one person selected at random from juries who recommend the death penalty to be required to be the one who throws the switch...and maybe require the whole jury be there to witness the execution.[Edited on July 29, 2008 at 1:04 AM. Reason : see who REALLY supports the death penalty.]
