But it's actually not. Areas like that are the 70's-80's growth areas of Cary and those were pretty damn nice neighborhoods in their day when those houses were built. Calling it a shitty part of Cary just makes you look like the sort of yuppie scum that live in Cary that make people talk shit about Cary. $300k is an upper middle class house, unless you and your spouse are barren and work 60 hours weeks and spend more money than you make. You all saying that it's not upper middle class need to get your income brackets right.

I've lived in Cary for 20 years for what it's worth. I'm not trying to sound like "yuppie scum" I'm just stating reality. Not even having a full mortgage paid on a 300k home does not make you wealthy or even close to it. Some of you guys need to go to the Northeast U.S. where there are literally miles and miles of neighborhoods of multi million dollar homes. Then maybe you'd realize that calling someone who lives in a 300k home "upper middle class" is ludicrous. I am sure compared to some rural areas in NC living in a 300k home constitutes a really wealthy person, but in the Raleigh Durham area a 300k home is not upper middle class.

***BREAKING NEWS***

this thread is about a dead mexican woman who was (allegedly) murdered by her much-older mexican boyfriend.

stay on topic!

ps - you can all kiss my middle-class white ass for living in the (supposedly) shitty part of cary. i wouldn't want a $700k house in macgregor downs even if i could afford it. i'd rather live comfortably and spend any extra money on nice vacations and other small comforts in life, like going out with friends and having a good time. we live in a $200k two-story house with 3 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, and 3/4 acre in a nice subdivision with nice people all around us (except for the dirty mexican who just killed his gf) and i couldn't ask for anything more. except for maybe an in-ground pool - that would be sweeeeeet.

Miles and miles of neighborhoods of multi-million dollar homes? Yeah. And what percentage of the population in the North East under 30 owns any home? Let alone one of the homes you're talking about. How does that ratio play against home ownership down here?

You've got your head in the sand, so does the vast majority of this country when it comes to home ownership, and debt. If you think McDonald Woods is a shitty area, even for Cary, you're living in one heck of a small world my friend. Go check out Wrenn Drive some time, or for that matter get out of Cary once in a while and spend time with actual poor people.

Whereabouts in Cary did you spend those 20 years? If you think the folks living in MacGregor and Preston are living off the average $88k per family, I suggest that you check those stats my friend. Furthermore, if those neighborhoods represent Cary as a whole, then I'm ashamed to have spent the last 22 years of my life here.

It doesn't matter where you live; if you can comfortably afford a 300k home without having to use some sort of inheritance to pay for it then you are upper middle class.

I would be surprised to see what kind of incomes people associate with upper middle class. Considering that the lower income limit of the top 20% of American households is around $88,000 a year, I don't see how you can claim that anyone earning money in that income bracket should be able to afford a $700,000 home.

You make a good point. It's amazing how quickly a thread that wasn't focused on the class divide at all initially quickly devolved into a "Two Americas" discussion. (Or perhaps a "Two Carys" discussion?)

Incidentally thumper I can practically see the house from my backyard. So I'm feeling the close-to-home thing that you're talking about here.

"some of you have really fucked up conceptions of wealth. A 300k house is upper middle class."

Class is not about income or debt, but wealth and power (mostly relevant for the true upper class). Using a 300k house as an indicator of wealth is an intellectually dishonest way to look at it. Most "upper-middle class" Americans live way the fuck above their means but 'own' cars and houses they can't really afford. Sticking feathers in your ass does not make you a chicken.

Similarly, there are plenty of multi-millionaires living very modest lifestyles. You can't look at surface level attributes like cars and houses to determine if someone is middle class or upper class or whatever.

i'm not arguing with you, but the fact is that people DO look at these "surface level attributes" to determine wealth class. that's part of the reason some people live well above their means.

My boss at my clt engineering firm owned a busted old volvo and a 800k house in downtown clt ( not very representative of the fact the dude makes 1.26 mil a year ) but he does have 2 real rembrants and a monet in his house along with 3 more paintings traveling with a new york museum's art show.

I think the argument being made by Mindstorm diverged a bit, probably because he recognized the weakness in his point.

If a kid fresh out of college can afford one thing, then yes he/she would be in the upper range for people their age. however, this same standard does not apply for those who have been working for 20 or 30 years. 300k is not out of the realm of reach for many college educated couples and would be no where near the upper bracket of expectations. A dual income of 150k isn't that hard to obtain and i'm sure plenty of twwers will have dual incomes of that or higher in the next few years. Personally a 300k home is solid middle class while 500k pushes into the upper middle zone. 700k for me would be decidedly upper middle but nowhere near the cut off for upper class.
