yes. we were camped out on the church roof

but no, my family owns all the wooded acreage you see behind him. The cemetary was just the closest exit point we could drag him out.

^^i guess Sunday hunting is legal where you are? Lucky!

I had a pretty slow weekend even though i heard shots all around me. I've been doing half days, leaving the stand about 11. But i saw 2 doe thursday and let them walk because i thought there had to have been a buck not far behind...nope. This morning first light came super early so i thought for sure there would be some activity but i didn't see anything.

Does anyone here bow hunt? I'm really interested and want to get into it.

Wednesday: A small four point came out, decided to take him b/c he's the first buck I've seen this year, and I don't get to hunt much. Shot, and he ran off. I thought for sure I missed. I went down to look, and didn't find any blood where I shot, but 40 yards later I found some blood on a tree. Looked around for the deer, but it was getting dark so I left, and came back the next morning. Got down from the stand early, and continued the blood trail for 150 yards or so and then lost it. Looked for three hours with no luck. With the angle at which I shot, and with the weak blood trail, i think I missed low and caught him in the leg. It's really unfortunate, cause I always want to make a clean shot.

I hunted thursday and friday and only saw a doe and button buck, and didn't shoot either.

Didn't hunt this morning b/c of the football game ( GO PACK), but got a call this evening from my uncle. He hunted this evening and decided to get down early since he had a long walk to the truck. He got down, and immediately saw a doe cross a trail in front of him. He paused, and heard a buck grunt, and decided to grunt with his mouth. The buck responded back with a grunt, so my uncle grunted again. The buck grunted again, and walked out on the trail in front of him. My uncle dropped him. It was a crazy looking 7 point buck.

The rut will make bucks do some crazy things. On the way out to our property on thursday afternoon we saw a tall 4 point on the side of a busy road making a scrape at 2 in the afternoon.

hey, Jeepin4x4, i love bow hunting. its really cool because its almost a guarantee to see more deer, because they haven't been messed up with people in their territory (bow season starts a full month before gun season). i really enjoy it. i shot at three this season with the bow, hit all three, and only found one unfortunately. i'm certainly no expert at it (i don't even have a great bow), but i can tell you what all i know about it if you want.

NutGrass, thanks, i'll definitely ask you some questions once i get closer to decision time...i'm trying to decide if i want to get a bow or handgun first at the moment.

My uncle spent thanksgiving in western NC and got a big 9 pointer. I think he said it weighed 214 lbs. I'll post a pic once they are sent to me.

Shot a coyote on Thanksgiving day. She weighed about 50lbs and had a really pretty coat. I'm having a full body mount of her that should look sweet!

Any interested in or do any waterfowl hunting on a regular basis? I used to go with my cousin's husband, but they've since split so i'm kinda out on that.

We should get a tww duck hunt planned if someone has the land/connection to make it happen. I'd totally be up for it

^yeah i'm thinking about going out too. Yesterday morning would have been perfect after that rain, the deer were probably very active. I'm hoping the rain/snow will hold off tonight so i can at least get in there for first light. I will probably just set up my ground blind and hunt until about 10am and call it day

ok...i'm starting to think it may be a waste tomorrow. 70% chance of percipitation starting at 10 tonight. 90% cloud cover. I may just stay in my warm bed and watching hunting shows instead.

My dad just got back from South Dakota and a 4 day pheasant hunt. Supremely jealous, but had some of his killings for dinner last night (they were airmailed and delivered fresh on ice the next morning). Pheasant can be a delicious meal if you prepare and cook it right.

Doubt i'll get to do any upland bird hunting unless it's a last minute day trip or something.

Still looking for an outlet to do some waterfowl hunting though. Not giving up hope yet

i sat saturday morning until about 12 and didn't see shit. I went and scouted for about 30 minutes and saw dozens of fresh rubs and few fresh scrapes...one only a few feet from where i usually post up. So he had to have smelled me from my last hunt at that spot. But the markings and evidence is all there. But i've only been able to hunt mornings this season and from all the gossip at the local bait stores and chatter online it seems these bucks are more nocturnal this year, especially now post-rut. I have the entire week off after christmas so i'm going to really try and spend a few full days out there and hopefully see something pop up before i loose shooting light.

oh, btw. Saturday was cold as shit, but i got a set of the Under Armour Cold Gear 3.0 thermals as an early christmas gift and those things are worth every penny.

My happy ass went back to bed.

Also didnt help that I had been up drinking until 2am...so I figured I could use the sleep, lol.

" Goldsboro teen shot while hunting deer
Posted: Dec. 13 11:21 p.m.

NASHVILLE, N.C. — A Goldsboro teenager injured in a hunting accident on Saturday is expected to be OK.

Braxton Hood, 14, was hunting deer with his 58-year-old father, Danny, in the Momeyer area of Nash County when a bullet from the father’s weapon ricocheted off a deer and hit the teen in the forehead, according to Lt. John Reams of the state Wildlife Resources Commission.

The teen was transported to WakeMed where the pellet was removed. He was recovering at home Sunday."

if you get out of the stand before it requires a flashlight to get down then you're doing it wrong

unless you're morning hunting or you've already shot one, of course

Yeah, this was the first time i've gotten to afternoon hunt all this season.

It's creepy as shit walking down the American Tobacco trail in pitch black.

This late in the rut, what kinds of scents are you guys using? I've been hunting for years on and off, but definitely not that good at it.

i've given up on scents this late in the season. about all i do is spray scent killer on my boots. I don't have any right now, but instead of using doe-in-rut or estrus stuff i'll use plain old Tinks Doe-P and pour some on my boots or around my area.

if that thing walked in front of me i would probably shit my pants.

that's a great kill, i didn't read the article but did they say if it was a fair chase hunt (public lands) or if it was on a preserve (fenced in, guaranteed kill)?

i usually just wear a pair of cheap thin fleece gloves with a pair of hot-hands in them. Allows me to use my hands more but like i said they are cheap and barely last a season. I have a pair of RedHead thinsulate/fleece gloves that i wore for the first time this season on saturday. They are pretty bulky, but they are pretty good gloves.

I got some insulated gloves from Dicks....think they're Field & Stream...cost like $25. They're nice and toasty. I'll see exactly which ones they are next time I go out to my car.
