I don't think it's possible for Boston to overstay their welcome. My favorite Boston song is Foreplay/Long Time and it's like 8 minutes long.

I like the Allman Brothers, and some of my high school friends had a jam/psychedelic band that was nice. I loved listening to Led Zeppelin's live stuff where Jimmy Page would just go wild.

The shows where he's drunk off his ass are better than the ones where he's coked out of his mind.

Note: The shows where he's drunk and on coke are even-keeled and kinda bland.

I don't think OAR falls into the "jam band" category....they're more like pop-party-frat rock IMO

And yes, there are some jam bands that are monotonous and uninteresting, but there are also some that are very talented, creative musicians. A big part of it is the on stage improvisation, not confining a song to the constraints of the studio version. I love some Moe, P Groove, and some Phish (though i'm not a die hard follower.) Bands like WSP have less appeal to me, but I can still have a good time at one of their shows for obvious reasons, despite only really liking a few of their songs.

It's groove based music, not vocal-centric...makes you want to bob your head, maybe dance around a little bit

I've never gotten into the electro jam band scene, but STS9 is a bad ass band and put on one of the better shows I've seen.

It's not like they re-write the song every time they play it. It's the same song, but different in that parts of it are improvised. A solo or a jam section will never be the same, but the song will for the most part be the same.

Or they'll approach it in a different way. Umphrey's McGee can play the same song 4 nights in a row and each night it would be different. 1 night would be funky, 1 night would be rocking, 1 night would be jazzy, 1 night would be dub-y. It's cool to see the band take whats technically the same song but make it different each time it's played. Plus it keeps them from getting tired of playing it. It's fun and exciting for a fan, and keeps them on their toes for whatever may happen next.

Not to mention how they'll segue in and out of songs, sandwhich songs in the middle of other songs, use interpolation, etc...

UM has a closed circuit microphone system on stage for the members to talk amongst themselves while playing. On their blog they'll release some bits of it to give fans a glimpse of how jams progress.. It's cool as fuck to hear them, in the middle of playing something, work out how they're going to play something else and pull it off flawlessly.

And if there is a particular version of a song that you love, you can always go download it for free since essentially all of them have open taping policies.

Quote :
"The other issue is that a lot of these bands play outdoor shows, where the sound sucks and you can't make a connection with the band because even the closest seats are 30 feet away."

That's not true at all. 95% of jam shows I've seen have been in intimate venues of 900 or so capacity. Neighborhood Theatre, Lincoln Theatre, Visulite Theatre, Orange Peel, Georgia Theatre (RIP), etc...

Not all jam bands are Phish, Widespread, and Grateful Dead.

I dare you to pick up Umphrey's McGee's latest album - Mantis - and tell me its not one of the better progressive rock albums in a while.

Then see one of their shows and tell me its not one of the most kickass things you've ever seen.

edit: and no, you don't have to be on drugs to enjoy it. also, i listen to a pretty wide variety of music, so i'm not just some spaced out, on-tour-with-widespread! douche. i hate widespread as a matter of fact, and am only a casual fan of phish.

This is seriously the lamest thing I've ever heard of. Improvising musicians have used their eyes and bodies to communicate for hundreds of years with no issues.

they do that too. a lot of that. they mostly use the mics to talk to crew about sound eq, but sometimes they'll work things out on it.

the man who claims to be about all things art is pretty close minded it seems.

If you want to hear the same shit over and over, just listen to the damn album at home. jam bands give you a reason to come see their show time and time again.

you don't hear about people going on tour with kanye.

what the fuck does kanye have to do with anything? kanye is garbage.

i maintain that a band with good songs can play those songs and have them stand on their on merit. rearrange them now and then, sure, but there's never a need to go all noodley and stretch out.

also, i have never claimed to be about all things art, and i have never claimed to be open-minded.

i anticipated that, but was not looking for it

i find absolutely nothing enjoyable about jam bands, and i have relatively eclectic taste in music

so i wanted to know if anyone could give me a reason that made sense to me

so far, no one has

i'm not telling anyone else to not like it, i just don't get it

you can't call your tastes eclectic when you hate everything that doesn't fit into the image you want to portray.

except that's a lie.

Pretty much any thread that anyone posts about any music, there will be a post with you shitting in it. You hate anything that's played on a radio station, can be considered mainstream, or has a following numbering north of three digits.

I mean, that's your right to be that way. Clearly you've put a lot of time and energy into being an elitist, and it should please you to know that it's been noticed!

Disco Biscuits, Bassnectar, New Deal, Lotus, Keller Williams, STS9, Panic, Grateful Dead --> i like this music, because at shows music is improvised in real time. no show is ever the same, and that appeals to me. you never know what you're going to get, but you always know it will be a great time!

he's not a jam band, he's an awful dj who has no idea how to build and release tension in his sets. his show that i saw was just a constant stream of shit. he would build and build and build these mixes up, and just drop the same break beat every time. then he decided to give us some knowledge in between songs, "i really think dick cheney should be tried and hung from a tree, i really think that. free your mind!"

plus, he tours on the jam band circuit, so he is associated with them. fuck that dude. worst show i saw in 2008

I was gonna agree that I wasn't a big fan of jam bands, but then I saw the Allman Bros. listed.

Come on, they rock. Their songs are just so good that you want them to last twenty minutes.

I mean, come on!

Why does anyone like any kind of music? Some music sounds good to certain people. Other music does not sound good to those people. Don't think so hard about it, just enjoy what you enjoy.
