glad to see you guys approve, and keep in mind they did JUST open this week. I know they're getting TVs soon, and the waitstaff/bartenders are new to it too. Sorry you missed those sweet potato fries, them shits are amazing with that praline sauce

This place looks closed. Anyone got any info?
12/28/2009 12:45:53 PM
i hope not- I was meaning to check this place out, and it would be a shame if it didn't make it even 6 months
12/28/2009 12:50:26 PM
When they opened, they added a bunch of custom external decorations that look like they have been removed.
12/28/2009 12:52:30 PM
I just know that I have seen a bunch of homeless bitches hanging out in that stairwell before, but I don't know anyone who has actually been there- I'd like to check it out if it is actually still open

the one time i went there, i sat at the bar for 5 minutes before one of the two bartenders came up to me. the burger was decent, but i'm pretty sure i paid $2.75 for a busch light, which should never happen. the inside had really cheesy paintings of surfers and beaches... made me feel like i was at a beach-themed Chuck E Cheese. not sad to see this place go(the Big Kahuna sign is down, so i assume it's closed)[Edited on December 28, 2009 at 1:10 PM. went there once and had to pay $2 for a can of natty light. suck my balls, big kahuna

$2.75 for a Busch Light is highway robbery. If the cost wasn't clearly labeled somewhere I would've raised a stink.FYI, I'm not invested in this business one way or another. It just sucks that businesses can't stay open on Hillsborough St., especially not in that location. Big Kahuna was open for, what, 5 months? Sucks for whomever lost their shirt in that investment.

im a little disappointed that it was closed, but the one time i went there the service was pretty bad and we waited forever to get our food. I ordered a big kahuna burger and sweet potato fries, nothing complicated and the server guy actually said that was the standard favorite that people like, so i figured it would be something easy to get.burger was a little smaller than i imagined but it was still good. Fries were good. price was a little high.If they are still open and i go back i'd see about calling ahead my order so it'll be ready by the time i get there instead of waiting 30minutes.

^^ I'm sure a good business could stay open there. An overpriced burger place with a stupid theme is not a good business.

yeh, the service and food were subpar. I don't feel bad for the investors... they delivered a shitty product and had to know it

What is the deal with that part of hillsborough street? I wonder how much those places cost to rent/month.....it's like once you pass dan allen, cup a joe and pantanas are the only places that don't have bi-annual turnover. ....I heard that the property owners are just letting the property get shit on until they can sell it in a few years to make bank. Anyone know the deal? Best of luck to Big Kahuna- I went there a few months ago when it first opened- and it was a GREAT environment with the inside/outside bar. Best for summer and spring environments. I will probably go there more when it warms up again because I've been going to the only other outdoor seating restaurant- EV- for 10 years now....and I'm kinda tired of that dog food and ready for another establishment's dog food.

Ummm...The last thing you want to do if you are planning to sell a property is let it go to shit. The value of a property is directly tied to it's rental value. People make their livings on buying shitty properties, making small improvements, jacking up the rent, and then re-selling them based on higher earning potential.

^^ I think the space was for sale for around $375k before Big Kahuna moved in.It was only around 1600 sq ft, so no one really wanted it.

I've always heard rental prices on the street were ridiculously high which is what leads to many businesses not making it.
12/28/2009 7:20:17 PM
i don't think they timed their opening very well eitherbut i'm sure a lot of factors contributed to the closingthat space is tinyand opening a restaurant is risky to begin with

Sounds like the owners are shooting themselves in the foot. Hillsborough St. is a dump because there are so few good businesses and there are so few good businesses because of high rent prices.Good businesses = desirability.Desirability = higher rent. They could probably turn it around in 5 years or less and see a huge return with some minor renovations and a good marketing plan.[Edited on December 29, 2009 at 11:12 AM. If Starbucks couldnt pay the rent on Hillsborough, you know there is a problem.
