pretty sure their location on wake forest has been closed for a long time

irregardless is not cheap

chubbys is good and cheap. salsa bar is aweeeeeeesesome
champa thai downtown is also good and cheap (although heard the pad thai is no good)
neomonde is ok...though their grocery is better than their prepared food imo.
burrito places are always good, two meals out of one as long as you arent a hog
lilys is DAMN good. is what mellow mushroom wishes it was
fish fry places give you lot of food for not much $
ive heard nothing but glowing reviews of duck and dumpling
for italian i like this place in north raleigh called capri...run by a couple of nice italian dudes
theres a country buffet on the corner of tryon and 70...very good down home cooking fare
old time bbq is the best bbq spot in raleigh (rawr rawr rawr)
cookout tray is biblical in it's good food/$ ratio

overall tho, if you're on a budget, learn how to cook.

Google Maps said it was 7 minutes from campus.

It fucking lied.

I got on to North Harrison Avenue or something--and I just couldn't find the turn for W. Catham.

If you haven't ever been to Neomonde go there. Better by quite a bit (IMHO) than Jasmin, Nur, Baba Ghannouj, etc. It's close to campus, basically back behind the Hillsborough St. Waffle House, on Beryl Road. Sitti is part owned by the same family (partnership w/Empire Eats) and is quite good too, just a different style.
Wasn't thrilled with Remedy Diner, but I've only been there once, needs another try.
Personally thought Thaiphoon was *very* overpriced.
Duck and Dumpling was quite good, if somewhat expensive.
It's kind of boring, but at the same time Village Deli does certain things quite well. Their meatball sandwich is probably my favorite in the area.

Just a handful of observations.

most def where would all the attorneys eat if it wasnt?

i get their glorified cheeseburger, everyone else gets the special whatever it is that day.

omg DO NOT EAT HERE. i work in the building it is in. and they closed for awhile due to lack of business and the lobby started smelling, and we found out it was rotten vegetables in their fridge.

and several times after that when they opened back up our building manager has found rotting food/and odors.

Agreed!!! Love the 1/2 off appetizers on Wednesdays. The crab rangoons, shrimp, steak app, and sesame chicken are amazing!!!

I also like The Point Cafe. Great mozzarella sticks, pizza, onion rings, and philly cheesesteak.

Good, but not excellent. And that's ONLY if you don't have a shitty waitress, left out sides/toppings for your burger, and a fly in your beer. Yuck.

Duck and Dumpling for dinner is a bit more formal. Went last year with the lady, not huge portions but it was good.

1. Get on Empire Eats e-mail list for specials at all of their restaurants http://www.empireeats.com/eatsclub.php
2. Jibarra has $7 lunches through 9/22
3. For casual Italian, Casalinga in Mini City and Casa Carbone in Oak Park are both good. Casalinga is more sophisticated but I wouldn't feel out of place going in jeans. For fancy Italian, Nina's in north Raleigh is outstanding (but the owner's husband is kind of a jerk so we don't go there anymore). I am going to try Gravy as soon as I've given up on the diet.

^^^Jasmin's is the closest thing I've had in Raleigh to authentic Middle Eastern. It is the only falafel I that tastes anything like what I've gotten in my travels over there.

Go downtown and get you a hot dog at Roast Grill. It's the oldest continuously operating restaurant in Raleigh.

http://www.roastgrill.com/

their website is also the first website ever made and has not changed since the internet was invented by Al Gore.

Player's Retreat is probably my favorite burger in Raleigh. Raleigh Times is right there with it, but I lean toward the PR because of the varieties and toppings.

As far as regular joe places:

I liked Village Drafthouse, but haven't been there since I initially moved away.

Tobacco Road has a FAN-fucking-TASTIC happy hour menu. From 4-7 they have a bunch of huge meals (w/ sides) for $2.95 and appetizers for $1.95.

I'm a fan of Woody's downtown. I used to go there ALL THE TIME like five years ago with my girlfriend. Would never spend more than $30 get two meals and a buzz. Plus they always played my Mets, Jets and UConn games...

Um, another awesome cheap date spot we used to go all the time was 42nd street. Peck of oysters and a few drinks for ~$25 for two.

Cooper's BBQ place on Dawson (i believe?) across from the Progress Energy place. You can get a sammich, tea/lemonade, fries or hushpuppies and pork rinds for 5 bucks, tax included. Their dinner plates are pretty cheap too. It's been there for ages, great food, quick service, small little place.

Oakwood Cafe - Cuban pork sandwich.
Raleigh Times - Pork Nachos
Morning Times - Egg and Cheese Everything Bagel
Remedy Diner - Breakfast sandwich (I haven't been impressed with anything else)

The Oxford is kind of lame, but they used to have a cheap burger on Mondays.
