So here's a little anecdote re: socialism. My befri's husband is from Italy....moved to the U.S. about 9 years ago and grew up poor etc. His mother and sister still live in the same little apt, share beds etc...So now they (befri & hubby) live in L.A., just bought a $700,000 house, drive SUVs, go on vaca's, eat at nice places etc etc.... For reference....my befri earns the $texas in the family and also works a shit ton....So a couple of months ago he was ranting on talking about how technology sucks because they keep inventing and improving it which means that people have to constantly upgrade their equipment and how it sucks for those poor people who had to pay to get the correct equipment for their old tvs to work with the whole 'switch'.... And he's going on and on and says how it's so much better in Italy because people there have what they have and they like it, and they don't have to 'waste' money and how everyone gets healthcare etc...And how Bush sucked and how socialism is the way to go etc... There was no real debating with him because he's a hot head and wasn't listening to anything but the sound of his voice, but I tried pointing out the flaws in his argument....
Then he started on a totally different (but not really) subject about how he wanted a new HDTV and didn't want a shitty one no matter how much it cost. So I said to him, 'OK, so then I want one too....so be sure and get one for me' He told me to buy one myself and that they didn't work the hours they work so that I could have a fancy tv.

think of the killing of the UNC student body pres. by a couple of thugs looking for some cash
it was completely senseless, but the reality is that girl and the thugs shared the same city, same streets, etc
and if some are left without the basic necessities in life then they will either die off, survive by working hard, or survive by taking from the haves

so one way or another society will keep itself in check
a way to avoid acts of desperation is to provide for some basic needs for all so our society will not have desperate people using desperate measure to meet their needs
