Atlanta is the gay capital of the south because its simple. Its the only place in the south gays can congregate and feel the least uncomfortable. I was there labor day and people at businesses and in public whom I asked for recs were like "omg avoid downtown by all means its gay weekend" Not even joking at least five strangers said that. Its not that the south doesn't have gays, it just has a lot of people who are scared of gays and think hey pose a threat to society.

Also, I haven't said a word about the north or New York so stop, reel it back in, and cast out a new piece of bait.

Raleigh is the south but its the upper limit. I wouldn't call Raleigh the "deep south" although most of north carolina is raleigh is all yanks and halfbacks. Think more alabam mis tenn ga florida.

NC has those too. In fact, there is an annual one happening in the triangle this month. See NCpride.org There was a NC Gay & Lesbian film festival in Durham too.

As far as the South goes, NC is relatively better than much of the south. We've passed pro-gay legislation at the state level, not many southern states have done that (heck, even NY is having trouble passing some similar bills). We are the ONLY state in the south without an anti-gay marriage constitutional amendment (not even California can claim that).

And as far as NC goes, the triangle is the place to be. While NC has probably had a few dozen elected officials who are openly gay, the triangle is the center for those elections, with the highlight of being the only place to have openly gay mayors. Franklinton which is north of Raleigh, and Carrboro which is on the west end of the triangle, and after November there will be a 3rd gay mayor added to that list.

NC has changed a lot too both in population migration, but largely in the younger generation taking over too. Growing up, being openly gay in Mt. Airy, a small town in the western side of the state (aka Mayberry from the Andy Griffith show), being openly gay could have been dangerous. But now, just this weekend, I danced with my husband at a country club & didn't even turn any heads. And I wasn't the only gay couple there.
