Are you serious LiLStarlet27? This was a common occurrence in many North Carolina schools up until the mid to late 90s. I think the mix of a increasingly lawsuit happy nation and all of the finger pointing following a certain shooting incident has nearly eliminated it now.

^^^^my mom had anger management issues. looking back i think it had a lot to so with trying to raise a kid (me) while both young and broke. (she was only 20 when i was born, my dad 19 i think)

i think it has much more to do with parental quality and relative occurrence of spanking.

if the parent sucks and has to resort to spanking every few days or so i'm sure it has a much greater impact than someone spanked on average less than once a month.

sounds like relatively poorly done research. you would need a larger body of subjects and follow them over a more continual spectrum of time.

2.8 points is easily in the error range of IQ tests (you could get more than that swing by merely altering what they had to eat for breakfast that day)

I have been spanked countless times. Spanking and other forms of corporal punishment combined with a talk about what they did wrong are the best way to teach children. Parents have been spanking their kids for hundreds of years until the last 1-2 decades. Look at where our youth have gone since then. Now, there is a fine line between spanking and beating. I will never beat my kids, but I sure as hell will pop their butt for doing wrong.

My Family members each had their own punishment technique:
Grandmother 1 - throwing shoes
Grandfather 1 - Belt/ hand
Grandmother 2 - Fly swatter
Dad - Hand, belt, thumps to the head
Mom- Hand to whatever body part she could get a hold of
Old black nanny - put our hand on the table and hit it with a spoon or her hand!

* I also got soap in my mouth several times

By 'beating', I mean 'far, far more severe than a spanking, but not anything to cause permanent harm'. Sometimes kids need to have new skin colors for a week or two.

i will admit i'm probably completely naive, but i cannot understand the need to hit your children. i was spanked once, and i didn't need it again.

no, i'm not a parent, but my sister has three children and besides the very occasional slap on the butt when they're way out of line, my sister, nor her husband, lay a hand on their children.

to each their own i suppose, but i don't understand it.

I was spanked once when my sisters and I woke my parents up in the middle of the night. Dad lost his temper and spanked us, but that's the first and only time he did it. That's what I meant by it not happening again.
