ok so you listed a bunch of things that have nothing to do with paying people to be friends with you, yet you're still sticking to your guns. it's not hard to imagine what dues go to, but most people who make the paying for friends comments still don't even know as much as the things you said. and you know if you're in a greek organization you don't have to hang out with the people that are in it, right?

um, not sure if you're confused or what, but Lambda Chi Alpha is a social men's frat. It is not coed, and it is not "focused" on global outreach. They're a social men's frat just like all of the other social men's frats.

I remember when they got kicked off of campus in '97 or so. I guess they're making a comeback?

OK, so you're not technically paying money to somebody in exchange for friends. It's not like we thought there was a "friends" aisle or register.

But there are still two ways to go about it. You can make friends the normal way, by being sociable and hanging out.

Or you can make friends the greek way, by being sociable, hanging out, and paying large sums of money to a nationwide organization based on the idea that a club is automatically cooler if you exclude a bunch of people from it.

you know a lot of people who rush a greek organization approach it with an attitude of, "i'll see what these people are like, and if i don't like them i won't hang out with them," right? isn't that the same as the "normal way" of hanging out with people and being sociable? yet the only difference is that people in greek organizations have to pay money for things like food, room and board, alcohol, parties, renting out bars and other events? this is what literally ever other person in college does, yet the ones in greek organizations get criticized for it.

I think that the basis of fraternities and sororities are pretty awesome. What they are supposed to be about is something I could back.

However, it seems as though that's not the reason people join them, giving them the bad rap.
Also they seem a little one sided in one way or another. (all boys/all girls/ african american/ lesbian/gay) which lumps them all back into the category-you are joining a club with people who share your same mentality/background/whatever.
And by joining this club you make the majority of your friends.
This has always bothered me, wouldn't a good transition into adulthood include interacting and being friends with people who are not like yourself??
Now you could argue that a person who doesnt join one does the same thing, but I don't know-I just feel like you are in more of a situation, if in a fraternity, to limit yourself to certain people and certain situations. I have no backing for this, i'll admit, but i have no proof otherwise either.

This isn't meant to be a generalization, although it came out as one, and there are a number of frats and sororities that genuinely hold up to what the values should be.
This is just a collection of thoughts ive had over the years.

All of this being said, I have no problem with them.

When frat court was a circle, they were between sigma nu and sig ep. The house became the ADPi House. A freind's older brother was a brother, and the story how they were suspended is a bit interesting.
