It's a fucking bobcat dude.

When I was younger I used to see them all the time in Carteret Country, especially since I lived along the edges of the Croatan National Forrest. Bobcats used to be even more common--heard a lot of stories. As far as this area, I'm sure it can't be too different. Clearly you should contact Animal Control in the future, though... or something.

^I lived there too, but I never saw any. Never had a pet go missing either. Maybe they just didn't like my part of the woods.

^^I lived right on the Bogue Sound, and that was before most of the area was developed. They've since been hard to find, but easier than most places because of Croatan.

My husband went outside a few minutes ago to get something out of our car and something in the woods started growling at him. We googled bobcat sounds and he said it sounded similar to some of those sounds...btw bobcats have creepy fucking growls.

I don't think a bobcat could do this. Bobcats are not much bigger than house cats. I would lean to say Coyote. Coyotes have got 2 of my cats in the last few years. We never have been able to kill one though. I hate those devils.

This thread is freaking me out I'm going camping in Pittsboro this weekend and the last thing I want to roll up on in the dark is a big cat.

That is really odd activity for a bobcat. They are very elusive and stay as far from people as possible. If it is a bobcat something is seriously wrong with it. Rabies maybe?

A bobcat could scale that fence without even touching it. Coyotes are just like dogs. How would a dog scale a 6' fence?

^ i had a dog who could climb fences. He would stick his paws in the holes and climb like a person and jump off at the top. Ive also seen wolf/dog hybrids that can clear 6 ft fences easily in one leap.

It's not a bobcat, it's a panther/puma/dark colored cat with realllllly long tail. I am 100% sure. There have been several spotted in eastern NC in the last couple years.

end of discussion

For all you saying panther over and over again... a "panther" is just a melanistic version of a large cat such as a leopard, jaguar, or puma. It's not a specific species of cat. The name comes from the genus Panthera.

>.< /end rant.

bobcats don't ever have long tails. they have [b]bobbed[b] tails. just sayin'

that's a horrible situation though. it most likely was a bobcat if it was feline. my big black outdoor cat makes horrible big cat noises when he fights, but he's just a regular domestic pet cat.

i do have a bobcat though

I actually killed a Coyote while hunting in Johnston County about two years ago. At the time I shot it I was not sure what it was but I could tell it was not a pet of anykind. I though it was some type of hybrid fox. Turned out to be a coyote. Ill have to find the pics and post them on here later.

"Coyote population steadily rising in N.C.
Coyote 8/21

Updated: Oct. 6 7:18 p.m.

The coyote population has steadily increased over the past decade, with all 100 counties now reporting having the animals.

Although state wildlife officials do not track the specific number of coyotes in the state, they say the number of reported sightings is on the rise in both rural and urban areas.

All of N.C. seeing more coyotes

Ten years ago, the animals were known to be only in the western part of the state.

State biologist Joe Folta says the reasons for the increased sightings have to do with natural territory expansion and the animals being brought illegally from other states to be released.

In Wake County, there have been 17 reported sightings this year near homes in north Raleigh, downtown Raleigh and Raleigh-Durham International Airport, where two were hit and killed last week by planes on a runway.

The animals are also causing problems for farmers, like Tracey Gardner, who says he has lost as many as 20 cattle in one week. He usually loses at least five cattle every year to coyotes.

"When you lose a baby calf and you expect to sell it for $400 to $500, and you lose four or five, you're losing $2,000 to $3,000," he said.

Folta says people should be aware of coyotes but not afraid.

"As far as attacking people, it's rare," he said. "If (people) do see coyotes in their yards, certainly, they do need to be a little concerned, if they have small dogs or cats that they leave outside unattended."

Folta also recommends securing trash cans and grills and cleaning up bird feeders to help keep coyotes out of yards.

Coyotes are not protected animals, meaning hunters can legally trap and kill them, depending on where they live."

I hunt bobcats in eastern NC several times a year and we routinely kill cats that go between 20 and 25 pounds. There are way more bobcats out there than people realize, they are just very elusive. We used to have free range chickens out at our barn in Rowan County, but when coyotes began showing up around 7-8 years ago, they started to dissapear. We began fencing in the chickens in a 5' tall pen and that stopped the coyote problem. If you had a lot of coyotes near your home you would hear them yipping and barking fairly often. My vote is for a large bobcat.
