Do you not own a car at all, or just not drive one to work

Because people who don't own cars (outside of major metropolitan areas, of course) typically are looked down upon

The better question would be "do you own a valid driver's license?"

Total - Between $7000 to $25,000 that's a continuous investment over the entire time you own the vehicle."

You dumbass...That only works if you are choosing one or the other. For the rest of us who are going to own a car regardless of whether they own a bike this breakdown is a joke. It is 100% guaranteed that I will not replace my car with a bicycle, so the bicycle is just an added expense. Thanks for showing just how gross of an expense it can be though. You did an excellent job of proving my point.

I spent $1400 last week on a new bike btw. I assure you it is nothing more than an expense and I don't think I'm saving a dime.

Bikes over 1000 bucks seem to be a waste of money to me. A functional bike that lasts for some time should not cost over 1000 bucks.

All you really need is a cheap, paid off commuter with minimal insurance (like an old civic hatch) for when it rains. Then, you've eliminated the monthly expenses of both gas and a car payment. I'd rather have a nice commuter bike than a nice car.

^^ That's actually not true, and why most people waste their money on wal-mart bikes.

why dont you fuckin bikers learn to follow the law of the roads

when someone hits your bitch asses yall wanna rebel against vehicles and critical mass but yall cats never ever ride according to the law.

thats my beef with bikers, well that and the fact that people like yourself want to challenge those who drive because you think youre somehow better than they are.

A great racing bike with all the bells and whistles will run around $10k.

But it's worth it if you're competitive.

i am all for pedestrian / bike paths that actually go from neighborhoods to major places of employment (RTP, Duke, UNC, NCSU, state gov. etc) but rarely are there either bike lanes, sidewalks, or paths (paved) available.

well God, not so much.

obviously one side is not only more vulnerable than the other, but also emphatically more fanatical

i applaud bikers that ride like they are supposed to, that dont ride in between cars and cut at stoplights and run stoplights and shit just because they are on bikes.

id love to bike if it were feasible, but yalls mentality is all fucked up

^RTP is horrible for bikers, you really have to go out of your way to legally ride since its surrounded by 40 and most of the roads have at best an intermittent bike lane

Yeah well those are the ones that are literally used on Tour de France races, so you're talking about a completely carbon bike with top of the line everything that weighs like 14 lbs (which is ridiculously light).

Example: http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/road/madone/6_series/meet_madone/

Right now is a good temperature outside but a few months ago when it was 500 degrees outside that shit would not be fun. And in a few months when it is freezing, that would also not be fun.

Biking down NC 54 from Fayetteville St. in Durham all the way to Blue Ridge would likely be a good way to get killed.

Then again I tended to drive when I lived ~2 miles from work, because I am a lazy bastard who can't be trusted to get out of bed one minute earlier than is necessary. At least I walked when I lived ~1 mile from work.

I'd have to go up a mountain to get home.

And not like metaphorically, it's not like a steep hill that would be annoying to ride up, I live in Alleghany and work in Wilkes, so I have to go up a literal mountain.

Biking to work would be fun I guess if I got a ride back, but it would take 2 hours.

i have to go to two or three places a day and that make biking impractical, even though i live only 4 miles from work my gym and my other job are 15 miles away and im gettin home at 10

so biking isnt an option, even busing is inconvenient and neither can i carpool or rideshare with coworkers that live in my complex. so we dont all ride cars just because we are lazy

According to neighborhoodscout.com, Orlando has a crime index of 1, meaning it's safer than 1% of all American cities. I'm not taking any chances. The Haitian gangs don't fuck around.

I drive my car to school because its convenient and I'm not overweight. I couldn't ride a bike to work because I wouldn't want to be sweaty when I got there. No one likes a smelly server.

On the premise that time is money and biking takes 20 minutes longer each way than driving, at an entry-level engineer's $30/hr. you get a total cost of:

40 minutes a day * 1 hour / 60 minutes * $30 / 1 hour * 5 workdays per week = $100

This does not include any extra usage of facilities such as showering or laundry. I spend far less than $20 a day on gasoline, even when gas was unbelievably expensive and I drove 45 miles each way. Bikes are a cost and only benefits are health (if you don't get hit) and enjoyability as a hobby.

Get off your high horse.

to be fair you must include the fact that they offer minimal pollution

unless they ride on soil and compact and degrade it

Not that much at all. I eat maybe one extra "meal" a day, which is just a bagel or something.

I don't get what you're saying. Are you saying you'll lose salary by biking to work? Just leave earlier and don't be lazy.

It's MUCH MUCH less expensive to bike. A bike itself is about a tenth of the price of a car, even when you look at the most expensive commuters, and there's no insurance or gas costs.
