After living in durham for a year, I don't think I would move back to Raleigh/Cary. I was absolutely certain I would move back after my wife finished residency at UNC, but I really like it here. The only thing I hate about durham is that it's full of UNC fans.

Downtown isn't so bad. The City government has done something really good, and important to maintain positive growth in the downtown area (the Unified Development Ordinance)

But having lived here as a kid, and again now later on in life... I still don't think anything outside of Cary Parkway should be considered Cary proper. Those freaking golf course 'neighborhoods' give the town a bad name.

There is a really big difference between the Cary inside Cary Pkwy, and the Cary outside Cary Pkwy

I'd like to think that most people who have big problems with Cary and the relocated people are thinking about the later. Those are your golf course communities, and your yuppy-suburbias. The older parts of Cary are great.

I judge Cary based on the morons I interact with. According to those interactions, Cary sucks.

there is a reason why no one can find anything in Cary and why people think it's hard to drive around in (crappy layout of roads partly), it's mostly because it all looks the same, from every angle from every direction, shit looks the same...

Lived in cary my whole life but always attended school in Raleigh... I couldn't imagine going to school with the type of stuck up fuckers in my neighborhood... then when it came time to go to high school I went to broughton and found out about the whole itb thing... enough said.

Though I do enjoy driving back home on cary parkway getting off of US-1, I find it pleasant compared to the area around NCSU. But yeah cary truly is devoid of culture. Freaking town ordinances and home owners associations completely limit personal liberties when it comes to your own property.

thats what i meant in response to the "cary city managers really have their stuff together..." piece

they've banned all types of signs for businesses and overhead highway signs so its really hard to

A. use landmarks
B. find businesses (ie a mcds arch sign)
C. find the highway and which way to go on it.

In carys defense. It does not look all the same. Infact its looks nothing like all the othe highway towns in cities in NC.
By this I mean a town that is off a major road. They are usually two roads or strips that have everything the po dunk town has to offer.

If this was as painful to read as it was to write I'm sorry I want to go to sleep.

I've lived in
Dunn, NC
Milan, Italy
Munich, Germany (briefly)
Manhattan
Raleigh
and finally Cary.

That being said they each have their own charms.
Personally, I like Cary.
My neighborhood is mostly retired grandparents with killer stories.

I would love to move to Augusta one day. just fyi.

Lots of neighborhoods in Cary don't have ordinances or home owner's associations.

And the town ordinances that actually affect a residential dwelling are very very few.

Off the top of my head, I can only think of the sign ordinance.

So what specific rights do you have problems with Cary infringing on? My family has been in Cary for a long time in multiple houses and I can't recall once having issues with personal property and the Town of Cary.

no loop highways=great (just so long as you have overhead highway signs explaining which is which ahead of time, you know? the same signs cary got rid of for ugliness.)

loop streets with a diameter that small?=fail

example- im new to the area and looking for a bowling ally off of walnut. directions say the street im looking for is the first right after maynard. what i missed is that i cross maynard a 2nd time so i take the 2nd right the first time i cross maynard and realize its off so i get directions from a local. not realizing its pretty much on the opposite side of maynard local tells me to go back to maynard and take a left when i thought it was going to be a right. it doesnt matter which way I go but bottom line is you can end up going 4pi/6 around maynard if you don't know your way around good.

if you go to a grid style city you can instantly find where you are and where you're going without any help or previous knowledge.

then you cant find any business from the street without looking at the building. very annoying when normal you see a ten foot tall burger king sign, or what have you.

by looks all the same, i meant that most roads in cary look like every other freakin road in cary, it becomes difficult to tell which intersection you are at or approaching unless you're very familiar with it.

outside of downtown durham (which at least is varied, and has landmarks) i've heard the most complaints about cary in terms of difficulty in getting around

Obviously, if you live in Cary or are from there, Its easy for you to get around and also very easy to notice minute differences in features without using landmarks or signs as landmarks. Congradualations, you won. Now please get over yourself. This is not just friends but anytime a raleigh event is held at a place in cary that isn't right off the highway, all hell breaks loose and almost everyone at the event (friends or people i've never met before) can relate.

I love Cary. I was born in Chapel Hill, but have lived most of my life in this town. My family owns a few homes spread out over Cary. Why leave? People can hate all they want, but it's a great location with a lot of money as well. Real estate in Cary is a gold mine.

it is not hard to navigate around Cary...that's not the issue

it IS hard to make good time through Cary, because there are tons of stupid soccer moms driving slow as fuck and, if the road is two-lane, driving slow as fuck in the fast lane

the street-setup is fine...there's just too many people and too many of 'em are stupid/inconsiderate

My experience with Cary cops has been rather mixed. I got pulled over coming back with some friends late at night after seeing Lord of the Rings in the theater (OMG a car full of teenagers! They must be up to no good!). I've been pulled over on my bicycle while carrying my saxophone, my backpack and two band uniforms after a football game (OMG he's carrying things. He must be up to no good!). But then my high school chica and I got busted making out in the parking lot in my car and the Cary cop was really cool about it and was trying to keep from laughing at how embarrassed we were.

^ Seriously? Raleigh is so lackadaisical about speed enforcement that the NandO did a whole investigative report about it a year or two back.
