yes, and the rising numbers of them are a result of our fucked modern world--excercise/physical activity, diet, sleep (artificialy light, tech.), social interactions ALONG w/ a fucked healthcare system that gives is pushed to an easy solution[Edited on October 22, 2009 at 10:14 PM. Reason : ]

quit being a bitch and pill me up!
10/22/2009 10:17:37 PM
^^ lack of physical exercise you mean?yea i know. well therapy seems like a better (or at least a concurrent) alternative to medicine but yea - our healthcare system doesn't really lend itself to that.
10/22/2009 10:20:16 PM
just like how I meant the lack of sleep, lack of social interaction, and bad diet[Edited on October 22, 2009 at 10:22 PM. Reason : ]

why did you make this thread?we stomped this scientology idea of "no such thing as mental illness" out like 5 years agoStop stirring the pot you WHORE
10/22/2009 10:22:08 PM
^^that is true but i don't think all depression is a result of those thingsi mean i'm sure it contributes - people looking for an easy fix just want medicine instead of trying to change their lifestyle. but like someone else said - it isn't really a matter of going through a list of symptoms and getting "diagnosed" it is more about how it affects your life. so i guess if you DO try to exercise, eat better, etc and nothing changes then maybe something really is wrong^ to make you mad, of course. now run along, tom cruise and john travolta are looking for you and you know what that means![Edited on October 22, 2009 at 10:24 PM. I beg to differ, all of these effect your brain chemistry that CAN in turn be a cause.
10/22/2009 10:25:39 PM
um i knowbut i said i don't think ALL depression is a result of those things. people can exercise and eat well and still be depressed. and i don't know what the correlation is between those things and adhd - i don't know enough about add/adhd.what i meant was exercising and eating well and sleeping well can be the "cure" but at the same time people can do those things and still not feel well. ADD/ADHD is over-diagnosed.However, it exists, and living with it sucks. I never got diagnosed as a kid. I found out my third or fourth year in college.
10/22/2009 11:17:32 PM
tl; dris tom cruise in your class?
10/22/2009 11:22:38 PM
I have ADD.I had a prescription to Adderall when I was in school. If you don't believe in it, whatever. Doesn't really affect me either way.

Dey lotsa troof to dat. After the first two years, shit started hitting the fan. I didn't get tested until '95...and the psychologist stated that ADD, coupled with my high anxiety levels at the time, was really putting a bind on my ability to succeed.
10/23/2009 11:17:14 AM
^^that's what my doctors told methe statistic I was quoted was "Only ~5-10% of people who legitamately have ADD/ADHD graduate from college"All through middle school, high school and the first couple years of ncsu, I'd either fail a class or get an A.^I also have huge anxiety problems that are part of the ADD/ADHD package. woo.[Edited on October 23, 2009 at 11:22 AM. That looks like my high school records.I almost flunked out senior year. Took two AP classes...and the funny thing is in AP Calculus, I scored the same 2 on the AP exam that one of the most diligent students in the class did. And most of the time I was off in left field somewhere.
10/23/2009 12:09:22 PM
Oh and despite and my grades in classes/school, I can ace the fuck out of a standardized test which baffled my parents and teachers to no end through HS and college.
10/23/2009 12:12:52 PM
i am the opposite - always did well in school (i didn't just get by like i made As and Bs). all through college, too.i SUCKED at standardized tests. i think my attention span ran out after like 1.5 secondsbut no one even brought up the adhd issue with me until i was in law school - not struggling really bad with grades, but still struggling which was something i never experienced before (i mean yes, graduate school is hard but still - it is exactly like he said i "hit a wall" and whatever study habits or mechanisms i used to cope before totally didn't work anymore)
10/24/2009 1:11:57 AM
I kicked ass at standardized tests.Wasn't ever close to failing a class in HS, but end of grade tests always put me up from a C to B or B to A.SAT score put me over the top for college, despite only above average HS GPA.Same with my good GRE score getting me into grad school despite my crap undergrad GPA.
10/24/2009 1:18:35 AM
That's how I was...I did great in high school....my senior year not so great....and I'm still struggling with grades now. I mean I'm a smart person, but once my symptoms start showing (especially since I can't afford the medication right now) it makes me suffer.
