Sure...as long as you devote that time...I have a black labradoodle with admittedly more lab than poodle, 2 yrs old and adorable. We are finding ourselves way too stretched on the time factor...and I do NOT want to give her away. But we may have to. Crate trained, but could still use more training. She loves to chew on things. Still very much a puppy. She's not gonna get any bigger...weighs in around 45 pounds or so. I wish we had more space and less going on. I'd happily keep every animal we have, but I don't want them to suffer for lack of attention.

i mean if you are just buying a pet there is no reason to go purebreed unless you are allergic and need one of those lightly shedding dogs. I can understand buying a purebred dog if you are going to be using it for what it was bred for. like if you are a god damn sheep herder you might want to go get you a god damn sheep dog.

If you live in the city:NOIts a fucking dog.If it has to stay inside a fence or be cooped up all the time then don't bother. If you control its every action and sense of existence then you might as well put it to sleep. Dogs should be free to go wherever and do whatever the fuck they want. I don't get how more people don't see this. You shouldn't have to pick up dog shit, you shouldn't have to try and convince it not to bark at 2am, you shouldn't have to tell it not to run in the street.I'm AstralAdvent and i approved this message.

I want a dog so bad...but just can't do it right now for time and money factors. Be logical in your decision.
11/11/2009 1:15:28 PM
right now i actually have time to train a puppy. next semester i will have even more time because, though i'm taking a lot of hours, i'm not at school a lot at all (i def don't study there, i like my own house)all my furniture is old anyway (like old old, like some of it is from my dad's frat house, not that i want it to get chewed i'm just saying, it has been chewed on by a dog before and obviously the cats scratch it sometimes)its not just that i want a dog and don't want to do all the work. i want to do the work which is why i want a dog. waking up at 6am to go for a walk doesn't sound horrible to me. i dunno, i miss my doggy a lot when i was a soph in college one of my roommates got her bf a dog, he couldn't have it cause he lived in a frat house (ugh) so it had to live with us, 3 girls in a tiny ass (like TINY ASS) apt in charleston. that was NO bueno. i was the one that did most of the exercising of the dog cause i felt bad for it. and it definitely was NOT getting trained right because it didn't have enough space and all of us were way too immature for a dog. it was a lab. and big dogs CAN live in condos/apts, but you have to exercise them regularly (not just let them outside to pee). unexpected vet bills are definitely the only scary thing, but as long as my dog didn't have cancer or something crazy i think i could afford to take it in for its routine visits (obviously) and minor unexpected stuff (which often amounts to hundreds of dollars as i've found out with my cats!) i mean. i dunno. i know it is a big commitment. the one really good thing about adopting is that usually the initial adoption fee includes first shots, rabies, spay/neuter, and a $500 credit to a vet if you take it w/in 5 days and they find any other problems (at least at the wake county shelter it is like this).the major con is that i'm not settled yet and will likely move in the future; however, i would never move somewhere that didn't allow pets, i would LIKE to purchase another place (assuming i can ever sell this one) so if its mine it doesn't matter anyway, and i already have 2 cats so it isn't like having a dog would add an animal to take with me, i already have animals.^^^ where did you adopt your dog from?

My dog is epically well behaved. I work a lot too, but no issues with chewing, barking, etc. He's a Labrador and I'll give you the breeder info if you want.l
11/11/2009 10:11:53 PM
Yes.
11/11/2009 10:12:42 PM
yeswe rescued a black collie/lab mix from the wake county animal shelter and it was one of the best decisions we ever madehe is the laziest dog i have ever seen though. he'd rather chase a bug in the house than go outside and play fetch with a tennis ball
11/11/2009 10:19:35 PM
lol!i think i'm going to look at the shelter again. has anyone done puppy training classes (at like petsmart or anywhere). do they actually work?i'm not jumping into this i definitely want to find a dog that i'm comfortable with. like at the shelter when i got my cats how they like "chose" me. i dunno i could just tell they were the ONE(s) i was supposed to bring home!
11/11/2009 10:28:49 PM
YESname the dog EMCEkick it often
11/11/2009 10:29:14 PM
Just get a full grown dog. Less people want them, so it helps to adopt the "less adoptable" dogs, and you get all the benefits of a dog, just without dealing with all the puppy bullshit.
11/11/2009 10:30:52 PM
i know i want to do that but i'm scared it will be hard adjusting it to my other animals. it seems like it'd be easier if it was a puppy?no?
11/11/2009 10:31:43 PM
11/11/2009 10:37:52 PM
We have adopted two adult dogs, and both adjusted perfectly to our cats and each other. I admit, we may have just been lucky?
11/11/2009 10:40:03 PM
As one of adam8778's dogs, I feel it's my place to interject here. The cat eats my food, and often passes gas and blames it on me. I wish I could bring this issue forward to my owner, but I'm afraid he would never believe me.
11/11/2009 10:41:42 PM
ok. this dog is ~ 1 year old and she is SUPER sweet. played with her today. today i just put a "do not put to sleep on her" because she has been in the shelter since 11/12 and they said they euthanize around the clock so at least i know she won't get put to sleep before i can go back and get her.HOWEVER the volunteer secretly told me that starting tomorrow they are reducing adoption fees for the holidays. i think she told me cause i was just wavering back and forth like do i want her do i not do i want her do i not. i mean i DO want her it is just a big decision! anyway i think i'm gonna go look at her again tomorrow. super sweet. "hound mix" - obviously unique colors. very calm (i mean compared to all the other dogs) in the shelter. didn't bark AT ALL. gave lots of kisses!!we were there near close so i want to go back tomorrow and have them "cat test" her just to make sure she doesn't like, eat kitties!
11/29/2009 5:15:19 PM
be careful with dogs that are "calm." Sometimes they are calm because of underlying anxiety and/or fear issues, which can be very hard to deal with for first time/inexperienced dog owners. Bring a guy with you next time to make sure isnt scared of men and even a dog and notice its reaction.Wait did you go the adoption center on Tryon or the shelter off New Bern? The adoption shelter dogs should be fine...they are well socialized and tested for any fear/anxiety issues. [Edited on November 29, 2009 at 5:22 PM. Reason : a]
11/29/2009 5:20:44 PM
^ thanks - good thoughts!! a guy was with me - so at least i know she doesn't mind men. i mean she wasn't too calm like skittish or anything, she just wasn't bouncing up and down in her cage and barking like a lot of dogs.she definitely jumped up in the play room and pulled on her leash and gave like a thousand kisses and wagged her tail.i hope she doesn't have anxiety issues - i definitely know what you mean though. i've seen people adopt dogs with those kind of issues - they are almost worse than the overly hyper dogs. i guess cause a lot of dogs that are "hyper" are just that way because they've been in a cage for a month and haven't had proper training. the anxious dogs have probably had some kind of emotional or physical abuse and i don't know how to go about undoing that.i went to the new bern shelter - do they check there for anxiety/socialization problems?when i say calm i definitely mean relatively speaking - a lot of those dogs (PUPPIES) are nutty i played with the CUTEST puppy that i really wanted but i just don't think i can do a puppy right now. he was sooooo hyper haha and already trying to chew my feet.[Edited on November 29, 2009 at 5:24 PM. ^ they dont really do anything at the shelter besides take the dogs out and feed them. The volunteers will spend some time with the dog but thats limited based on how many dogs and volunteers there are, so yeah be a little careful with adopting a dog from there. I got mine from there and he is great with people, but he is terrible with other dogs (not fear or anxiety, just no idea how to properly play with them i.e. he humps like crazy and starts fights). Mine was 3 when I got him and Ive worked with him and now at 12 years old he can be with other dogs and not hump every 5 seconds.GET A PUPPY! You will always wish you had that experience once you have a dog because they are so much fun. But yeah puppies need a lot of time and attention so be responsible and dont get one haha. i know - really can't do a puppy though i just don't want one haha. i mean i do but i don't.well this dog that i want was an owner surrender. i don't know if that is positive or negative though. i mean so she's been in a home before - but obviously they gave her to the pound so i don't know if they were the greatest owners. however her intake stuff SAID she was good with other dogs and kids but i dunno - i bet everyone puts that on their surrender form?!she's just so sweeeeet. or she was to me though the puppy i wanted is so freaking cute. i don't know. if i go back tomorrow i'm scared i'll get them both. but i can't do that. the puppy was a 3 mo hound mix too...can't find a pic of him. his only downfall (besides being a hyper puppy) is that whoever turned him in left a UNC collar on him!!! 1. Buying animals alone 2. Making excuses, finding excuses to get a new pet 3. Daily or frequent pet buying needed to function 4. Inability to reduce or stop buying pets 5. Violent episodes associated with not getting a pet 6. Buying pets secretly 7. Becoming angry when confronted about buying pets 8. Poor eating habits 9. Failure to care for physical appearance10. Tried to quit buying pets before and faileduh oh!!! sounds like you may have a problem with pet buying ]

ok soooo the dog i put a do not put to sleep order on got put on the sick list today at the shelter - has an upper respiratory infection.she's going to get put down today if i don't go get her. this same thing happened to my kitten that i have now and they gave me the antibiotics (for free) and she was fine in like 2 days (i mean we finished the antibiotics of course).what should i do? i think i'm going to have to go get her. this is just so sad.
