"Glenfiddich 15 is a good scotch for about that price"

"^ I think it's expensive for the quality. It's not that it's terrible. In fact, it's a pretty good drink. However, it's doesn't stand out in the $25+ dollar range and comes off as mediocre compared to similar offerings at the same price."

It's a matter of taste

maybe "a bunch of dudes drinking the koolaid" = "there's a large cluster around a particular set of taste preferences"

Scotches for $50-60 that I think are better than Glenfiddich 15:

Lagavulin
Glenlivet Nadurra 16 Year (cask strength, non-chill filtered, it's glorious)
Macallan 12 Year

For bourbon, WR is excellent, Buffalo Trace is also pretty good and might be cheaper.

My caveat is that I live in California and don't know how the prices and availability compare right now.

Overall, I'd recommend the Nadurra because it's quite different, and for a special gift, a limited edition cask strength bottling is going to be more unique and memorable if you can find it than a Glenfiddich that you can find anywhere.

I'm a fan of Glenfidditch as well, but I agree with the Glenlivet 16.

Don't get me wrong, I do like the Glenfiddich, it's a good scotch. I just think some others are a bit better at that price point and would also make a more unique gift.

I think of Glenfiddich, Macallan 12, Dalwhinnie's and Isle of Arran as good everyday scotches if you're baller enough to drink $50 scotch as your everyday drink. But for a groomsman gift, I'd want to give something more memorable that the groom may have never seen before, instead of something that's at every liquor store.

I'm sorry. The only way I could see anybody recommending anything other than booker's would be if they've never had any.

"Booker's Bourbon is the only uncut, unfiltered, straight-from-the-barrel,
connoisseur's sipping bourbon available today. It's bottled at its natural proof of
between 121 and 127, and aged between six and eight years. Booker Noe, Jim
Beam's grandson and master distiller emeritus, hand selects each barrel that will
become Booker's Bourbon. Each barrel that will become Booker's bourbon is aged
in the very center of the rackhouse where the temperature and humidity combines
in the perfect proportion for the finest bourbon. This is truly the absolute best
bourbon available."
