Sorry I guess I'm not quite sure what you're arguing (not trying to be a dick just honestly not sure). I'm not a proponent of record sales indicating anything, but when you kept saying "polls" I thought you meant charts. But when you say "rated" and "now" I know thats not what you were referring to.

I think the White Stripes are a very widely known and well liked band among a wide range of audiences (general radio/popular music fans down to what some people on here refer to as "music elitists") and have been since 2001's White Blood Cells, or at least Elephant with the release of "Seven Nation Army" (2003).

Jack White was in Rolling Stone's(and maybe possibly Guitarworld's as well?) top 20 guitarists of all time list and White Stripes. I think the White Stripes also had an album in Rolling Stones top 10 of the decade?

Or maybe I took your statement wrong. Were you talking about your personal opinion of them or the media? Because I am not a huge fan myself (I do own a couple albums and listen occasionally), but I initially thought you were saying they weren't on the "polls" being the media's, not your own.

if all that is true then the White Stripes are over rated in my opinion.

Jack White should be in the top 50 guitarist of the decade not 10. I bet they didn't even mention Joe Bonamassa and Derek Trucks some of the best in the world.

Also I hate Rolling Stone, they are horrible (I got this for free for 2 years and I hated every one that came, they are so biased it's ridiculous).

Jack White is probably top 10 for guitarists who are still recording albums.

^^Oh don't worry, most any "best guitarist" lists I see I feel are total crap so I'm not arguing in favor of them. And I hate Rolling Stone too.

On another note, its near impossible to come up with a list everyone is going to agree with. For example, Derek Trucks is a hell of a guitar player but I am not a fan of nearly anything he writes, simply not my style. But certainly other people would gripe about me including someone like Guthrie Govan; a phenomenal player who is severely underrated outside of prog rock circles.

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez is easily in my Top 5 for current recording artists. The main thing hurting him in some people's eyes is the fact that

1. He just releases too much stuff. I love most of it, but have no problem agreeing that instead of releasing 14 solo albums and another 12 with full bands (just this decade) he probably could have released half that many and cut some of the stuff that felt bloated.

and

2. Ironically cares too little about what other people think about his music (normally not a bad thing but...) that some of the stuff he has recorded over the past few years seems to purposely cater to a very narrow audience. But outside of that his body of work this decade was phenomenal, diverse, and just refreshingly unique.

meh. i wouldn't say he underrated. it's pretty well known that jack white is a hell of a guitar player, but i think you have to see him play live to know that since he doesn't really show off that much on any of his albums with the white stripes, the raconteurs or the dead weather. but all it takes is listening to "ball and biscuit" or "catch hell blues" to know the guy shits talent. you wanna talk underrated?

this. marc ford fucking rules so fucking hard. i wish i could've seen the black crowes live when he was with them. dude plays with so much soul.

I've seen Marc Fucking Ford 5 times live.

Everything up to Lions is AMAZING, all great albums and then you have Chris Robinson's other band New Earth Mud. I actually like them more than the Crowes now; just saw the Crowes on the last tour outside Lincoln Theater.

yea that is the one thing about the Crowes, some one is always leaving. I miss Ed just as much as Marc. I got Warpaint Live on Blu-Ray and it's great, but I wish Marc and Ed were there; Ed is batteling a drug addiction and Marc Fucking Ford just can't stay in one band. He is either going Solo or joining up with other great musicians.

to be fair, i've never really given the white stripes much of a chance, but I didn't really get into what I've heard. To each his own, I guess.

Led Zeppelin is a whole different story. They are, in my opinion, quite possibly the most overrated band in the history of rock and roll.

On second thought, I take that back. U2 is the most overrated band in rock and roll. Led Zeppelin is second. Third? Hell if I know. I'll say the Beatles.

Yea I agree without Marc it's not the same, but you have to listen to this and you'll see why I miss Ed so much:

And Jimmy Page was a sloppy live performer. You can't get high off your ass, fuck up the whole show, and try to pass it off as spontaneous creativity.

I have over 150 live zeppelin concerts and I agree it sounds better in the studio, just like Pink Floyd. I mean what do you expect out of a live performance, I for one am not there to see them play the CD (Tom Petty). I want something live outside of their normal realm and some artist get fucked up to do this and some push it too far (Tom Petty, he came out after intermission and I couldn't make out any word of Mary Janes Last Dance. Plus I was sober working security at the show so I remember it well.

Derek Trucks is so boring I don't know how to articulate it.

The White Stripes' albums, in order of quality from best to worst:

1. De Stijl
2. The White Stripes
3. White Blood Cells
4. Elephant/Get Behind Me Satan/Icky Thump

^^Yeah, the drug/alcohol excess has never really bothered me since I don't go to many live shows.

I just hate seeing the retrospectives and shit. It's like 60 year-old legends sitting around laughing about all the drugs they took before their shows without even a hint of regret or remorse. They still seem to have obscene rock star egos and zero perspective/connection to reality.

I guess it's kinda hard for someone who was great to admit that they could have been greater. It's easier to cling to the tired narrative: creative genius fated for stardom/excess with no way out.

i know by "worst" you probably don't mean those last three are bad albums, but i'd still put the three of them ahead of white blood cells and self titled. i think get behind me satan is pretty underrated. i kinda like that jack white took them in a different direction and made them a little more complex musically instead of continuing with the stripped down, minimalist style of their first three albums.

^^^ Who's to say they would've been worse without the drugs?

^^ AWESOME NOODLING D00D. He's a great player, but I find him incredibly boring.

^ No, they're not bad albums. All three have a couple of excellent songs on them, but Elephant has a ton of filler and the other two never really come together for me. Also, the s/t gets a little boost with me because when I first saw them cold they were playing those songs.

a lot of guitar players do this. when you know the neck of the guitar like the back of your hand, you don't need to look at it.

I honestly believe he'd be just fine with an AC30 and a Memory Man, and it would probably improve his songwriting. The four identical Ground Control systems are just ridiculous.

that's basically what's shown in the documentary as well. there's also a part where he's talking about how a lot of rock musicians became super self indulgent in the late 70s/early 80s, and he says that when spinal tap came out he didn't laugh. he "wept" because it was such an accurate portrayal of what musicians had turned into. this is coming from a guy who has been in a band for 30 years with one of the most self indulgent egomaniacs the world has ever seen who constantly seeks attention and recognition for his humanitarianism or whatever the fuck it is. fuck the edge, fuck bono, and fuck u2.
