That's the nature of metal. they inspect for cracks all the time, measure them, then determine whether it's ok for flight or not. i guarantee that it wasn't the first tiny crack that had been found somewhere in the airplane--it just happened to be found just before takeoff.

also, all of you should understand that even if you lose all electrical power (unlikely, with the redundant systems), the engines keep running and you can still fly (unless maybe if it's fly-by-wire...i don't know...but regardless, that's not the case on a 737 or DC-10 or whatever...that's for F-16s and F-22s and stuff, generally)

"what kind of airplane were you in when you lost power for 30+ seconds? Modern planes should have nigh a power flicker when hit by lightning. It's happened to me twice - and the last time it was like a similar to a brown out at your house. Everything goes out for a second then everything power cycles back on. The weird part is all the florescent lights flickering on randomly. Engines never went out, it was more of a power disruption than an outage.

Pilot comes on "wow, looks like we just got struck by lightning, sorry about that folks. Nothing to worry about."

It was probably a second or 2 if that.

Most peoples' memories exaggerate things in situations like that.

Yeah, the only fly-by-wire surface on the CR9 was the outboard flight spoilers which assisted the ailerons. So no big deal if you lost those. I think a few Airbuses are fully fly-by-wire, but don't quote me on that.
