as a white person, using "nigger" is awful for obvious reasons.

that said, i think it's just fucking stupid for black people to call each other nigger as well. like, really dumb.

I would guess that "nigger" is the most offensive word in the English language. "Fuck" is a distant second -- maybe not even top five. Some other racial slurs probably rank above it, along with "cunt".

Either a word and various forms of it are bad and off limits or they are not. It is ridiculous that a word be acceptable for use for some but not by others. I don't see why a word or any form of it would be tolerated for use in everyday language, especially by the group that claims to be offended by its use. I believe in freedom of speech, for all citizens and that this freedom of speech is not segmented by racial groups, genders, sexual orientation, etc. I don't believe that you have the right to not be offended. I don't believe in hate speech. I believe in limiting the freedom of speech to speech that does not incite violence (killing, rioting), fear (direct threats), etc.

I've discovered that I listen to mostly white rappers these days... Aesop Rock, Eyedea, (not Eminem, fuck his shitty ass music) etc.

I will still rock some Beatnuts and Tribe tho.

The thread is a little off topic now.

It is about the difference in rap that white and black people tend to listen to, not the double standard of the word.

To me, it doesn't seem like there is a double standard. It just appears that way because a lot of "white" rap has a profound use of that word.

See #116 of Stuff White People Like.

Black Music That Black People Don't Listen To Anymore

If you are good at concealing laughter and contempt, you should ask a white person about “Real Hip Hop.” They will quickly tell you about how they don’t listen to “Commercial Hip Hop” (aka music that black people actually enjoy), and that they much prefer “Classic Hip Hop.”

“I don’t listen to that commercial stuff. I’m more into the Real Hip Hop, you know? KRS One, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, De La Soul, Wu Tang, you know, The Old School.”

Calling this style of music ‘old school’ is considered an especially apt name since the majority of people who listen to it did so while attending old schools such as Dartmouth, Bard, and Williams College.
