I am a female who used to wait tables.I find/found no offense at all in being called a waitress. This girl is an idiot.
2/10/2010 11:33:43 PM
it was always my impression that, strictly speaking, the person that brought the food to the table was the server; if that person also took your order and re-filled your drinks, they were a waiter
2/10/2010 11:50:28 PM
some people... OP, you're alright in my book.

I use to always say "waitress" and "waiter".But now that I've been working in the "industry" for 10 years...I now say "server." I don't do it on purpose...but for the people who have been in this field for a long time...everyone says "server." It might go along the lines of saying "SAs" (server's assistants) instead of "bus boys." I think its because I'm in Charleston and we have so many nice restaurants and it just all trickles down. In nice restaurants, whether male or a female, they're all "servers". I feel like I never hear "waitress" anymore.
2/11/2010 1:27:52 AM
^ 10 years, huh? If the waitre... I mean server, has been a waitre... server for that long, she should be used to it by now. She sounds like she's just being a bitch.

garbage man -> sanitation engineerseriously, this is the SERVICE industry. you are there to serve the customer. that is how you make your money. (not that there is anything wrong with it, but that's your job.) Customer service does not include coming across as a jackass by nitpicking the terms the customer uses and belittling the customer because they don't use the same service industry jargon that you use. I thought this thread was going to be about waitresses that take your 50 dollar bill on a 21.00 tab and ask "HEY DO YOU NEED CHANGE BACK?!". Most of the time I use my debit/rewards card, but if I hear one say "I'll be right back with your change". Then I usually leave a higher percentage.</tacky.pet.peeve.derailment>

I gotta question, when did it stop being waiter/waitress, and everyone started being called waiter?I'm not really opinionated on what to call people that bring me food and all, but I just can't get behind calling a chick waiter
2/11/2010 9:02:14 AM
The only correct course of action would be to go back to this restaurant and ask to be seated in her section. Then be overly demanding, speak to her in a demeaning way, leave a $0.00 tip, and complain to the manager on the way out.
2/11/2010 9:03:26 AM
she can demand to be called the queen of england if she wantsshe's still getting paid $2/hr to bring you food and drinks
2/11/2010 9:39:56 AM
So what is this place of business?
2/11/2010 10:13:40 AM
this reminds me of my former coworker getting upset when you called her a courier. She ran errands, she went to the court house, she carried things from point A to point B, but she hated being called a courier. She preferred "office coordinator" b/c she also put paper in the copier machines and ordered supplies.I still called her a courier.

"server" is the industry term and some people get uppity about it. I mean I say "server" generally but when I waited tables I couldn't care less if someone called me a waiter. this bitch is like that trash guy that insists on being called a waste management engineer[Edited on February 11, 2010 at 12:24 PM.
