I agree with McDanger for the most part.

I eat more and drink more and do so impulsively, and to me, it's a matter of genetics. Some people would say I have a problem and need therapy to "fix" it. But you can't talk your way to different DNA. It is what it is, and I am what I am, and my eating/drinking is no more something that can or should be fixed than, say, the short height of some dude who wants to play in the NBA.

That said, I want to live a nice, long, capable life so I do choose to manage my appetites in a way that will promote a long, capable life. And it is hard for me.

I'm just saying y'all are right.

We point to "problems" in people and try to cure and fix things that can't and shouldn't be fixed or cured.

I apologize for sharing.

holy crap, here we go.

"OMG! I'm fat, drunk and lazy cause it's my genetics! Instead of taking any responsibility for my own well-being, I'll just make excuses so that I continue to wallow in my problems!"

give me a fucking break.

I drink 8-12 beers every night, always after I'm done with my responsibilities (whether it be work or school) over several hours. I also plan activities around drinking, and thoroughly enjoy and look forward to it. Hell, I've got beer festival trips lined up months ahead of time, or bbq's, or superbowl parties, etc.

however, I never drink liquor. I don't drink to get hammered, on the contrary if I feel drunk I'll get a cab home if I'm out because I don't want to be in public without keeping composure. I have never been fired due to alcohol issues, nor do I miss class because of it.

by most "standard" definitions of alcoholism, I am one, maybe a functional alcoholic, but I really look at it as more of a hobby that I enjoy with friends or a way to relax after a hard days work, not as a disease.

Lol, but not really out loud, at the "I fit the standard definition, but I don't look at it like it's a problem" thing. I did that too. Both of those. for several years. I quit drinking completely almost three years ago.

I could hold it just fine. I'm not crazy anti-booze or anything either. I don't mind at all being around people drinking or going to a bars with friends or anything. I just don't drink anymore. I didn't mean to sound preachy about it.

According to the SADQ Questionnaire, I suspect very few of us qualify as alcoholics. I scored a 7, which indicates "mild dependence," and I drink all the time. You have to score under a 3 (out of 60) to be classified as having "no dependence," so that's not too shabby.

If you're curious:

http://www.markjayalcoholdetox.co.uk/wiki/sadq.php

According to the CAGE questionnaire, we're probably all alcoholics:

Quote :
"Two "yes" responses indicate that the respondent should be investigated further. The questionnaire asks the following questions:

1. Have you ever felt you needed to Cut down on your drinking?
2. Have people Annoyed you by criticizing your drinking?
3. Have you ever felt Guilty about drinking?
4. Have you ever felt you needed a drink first thing in the morning (Eye-opener) to steady your nerves or to get rid of a hangover?"

Everyone who has ever experienced a hangover will answer yes to #1, most people with parents and everybody who's had a bitchy girlfriend will answer yes to #2, anybody who has ever done something wrong while drunk will answer yes to #3, and everybody who drinks respectably has, at some point, at least contemplated #4.

For the record, let me be perfectly clear on this point:

My genetics are not responsible for my being an alcoholic. They are responsible for me being a functional alcoholic. My liver is an unstoppable juggernaut, and for that I would like to thank my dad's three-martini-lunch parents and my mom's moonshine-swilling hillbilly ancestors.
