mine is on oahu

saw the news at 630am when i woke up and sent him a text. he usually goes surfing in the morning on the weekends and doesn't always watch tv. he went to the g-sto and said it was packed but hes just outside of the evac zone.

however, calls to him are wonky as shit and it takes 3-4 to get through. he thinks they'll lose power for a day or two.

i'm glad he's a a strong swimmer and not an idiot. also i'm glad he's out there working for the navy so they'll account for his ass if i can't

Open ocean wave height =/= shore wave height

Correct but the point I was making is that dwelling on height is not important for a tsunami that is more like a river that comes and comes and comes for a few minutes and the amount of water, not the height causes the damage.

I saw this coming. You can only be Chile for so long before you start to shiver.

Ok. Lame joke.

But I'm glad they at least had better infrastructure than Haiti, though I wouldn't wish this on my worse enemy.

holy crap... a friend of mine lives in chile and was actually camping on the beach an hour and a half sw of santiago when the quake hit. they had 17 people and left right after work on friday. the quake woke them up and was so strong they couldn't stand or even sit up, just had to lie in their tents and wait for it to stop.

as soon as it stopped they heard people shouting "tsunami!" (in spanish & english) and they scrambled up this huge cliff and were grabbing onto roots & anything they could to pull themselves up. they sat up there for 2.5 hours listening to the water come in.

after it was over they climbed down and found that their car had been swept 200ft or so from where they parked it and all the windows were busted out. they had to leave everything on the beach (surfboards, purses, tents etc) and only a few people had their cell phones actually on them when it happened.

they had to take 3 taxis back into santiago because none of the cab drivers wanted to get too far away from home. thats the last i heard, no idea if their homes are ok but holy fucking shit

also another friend of mine is down there visiting & traveling for a few months and he posted some pics of the apartment hes staying in

^^ that happened like 2 hours ago... the one in Argentina.

There are 6's every week... of course if there in a major Metro area like LA or San Francisco, they will be newsmakers but most of the them are in desolate areas.

** There was actually a 7.0 on Friday off of the coast of Japan.

Are you fucking retarded?

Lets compare earthquakes using the UTC time zone then.

The big one in Chile happened:
Saturday, February 27, 2010 at 06:34:14 UTC

The one in Argentina happened:
Saturday, February 27, 2010 at 15:45:41 UTC

You said:
