I don't know for sure, but I would assume that the initial high current blast was meant to melt his internal organs and cause severe internal damage. Since his head is an electrode, they probably do this first to render him braindead and prevent him from registering the immense pain that the second round would cause.

The second charge is probably kept under an amp so that it will cause his heart to seize, as currents between about 300mA to 1A cause all the muscles in the current path to seize. They do this jolt for a minute to keep his heart stopped long enough to kill him, yet it's done at a lower power level so that he doesn't burst into flames and scare the shit out of the audience.

For anyone who is interested, I read a little bit more about the execution and the conversation he had with the victims' family the day before, and it helps round him out beyond the bizarre letters he sent to prosecutors and the victims' family. The letters alone are enough to make me think he's crazy, but it's nice to know he came to his senses eventually.

I'm thinkin the asshole got off easy. I would have stuck his as in to a wood-chipper. feet fuckin first. And, this would have been done the moment the judge/DA/whoever opened that letter. That he was even able to write letters and harass the family... inexcusable

I'm not a fan of the death penalty...but cases like this make it hard for me to want to hit the switch myself.
