Sometimes FDR gets unfairly labellized as the guy who started the depression.

Just to make things clear the depression arose before he came to power.


The reason we didn't have an equally powerful recovery and languished in hell for nearly 20 years (1929-1950) was because his wife hated the idea of people being successful for working hard and decided that all of our parents should grow up experiencing limited happiness.

That is the reason I excluded Obama from the thread, so that you could focus on specific issues that you disagree with, not universal issues that every rational American agrees with.

Unemployment didn't go down to single digits until after the War started. Maybe the economy grew but jobs did not, and actually during FDR's time as president unemployment was at an average of 17%.

WWII did help the economy. Massively ramped up production along with deficit spending (which at that point could and was paid back) pulled us out of a pretty deep depression when massive social spending could not.

At this point a war won't help because we already have a huge portion of the hardware necessary to conduct a war. In 1942 we did not, a war will no longer really ramp up the economy, which is why we are now trying to spend on... well, bullshit.

That's corporatism, and that's what we have now, because of government policies. Corporations and the individuals running the government are more than happy to work together to consolidate power.

Capitalism is when goods and services are traded on the market, and profits are distributed to those who invested in the capital goods necessary to make that profit. It's a good thing. You should be able to go into business and then make profit. If there were no profit, we would not have the amazing innovations we see coming out today. People don't spend time and money just so they can break even. They're trying to make a better life for themselves. If, at any point, the people running the corporations infringe upon the rights of any individual, they should be held accountable.
