the first time i cooked dinner for my gf ever (im a decent cook aka im literate and can read a recipe)i gave her the choice of meal #1, a legitimate, time intensive but probably would end up really good meal, or meal #2, breakfast for dinner (chocolate chip pancakes, bacon, eggs, hash browns).she chose meal #2 and it was awesome.it was also the middle of winter, which helped I think.

Pancakes are tougher to make than you'd thinkI can never get circlesAlways some butt cheek looking shapes
3/25/2010 11:31:46 AM
the key is giving them the space they need to spread out into a circle
3/25/2010 11:32:56 AM
subconcious butt love
3/25/2010 11:33:25 AM
I'd recommend a crockpot recipe, but it's probably already too late to start any of the good ones.Unless you plan to eat at 10PM
3/25/2010 11:36:46 AM
If you go for pimento cheese, make an upscale pimento cheese using something other than cheddar. Gouda makes a good pimento cheese: http://gourmetgirl1.blogspot.com/2008/01/goat-gouda-pimento-cheese-sandwiches.htmlGoat Gouda Pimento Cheese Sandwiches1 cup grated Goat Cheese Gouda1 jar roasted bell peppers (I use about 1/3 cup, chopped)1/2 teaspoon fresh Thyme1 tablespoon honey1/4 teaspoon Nutmegsalt to taste1/3 cup home-made mayonnaise (look for it in the index on the right)1. In a medium bowl, combine all ingredients and season to taste with salt.
3/25/2010 11:39:11 AM
I need to get on here more often...
3/25/2010 12:16:19 PM
thanks Ian. I'm so doing that.
3/25/2010 12:19:30 PM
^just be careful if thats how you cook it. It can get smokey and the pepper can make you cough, which would be kinda funny but may not be what your going for
3/25/2010 12:22:27 PM
^Dont scare him! But yeah, pay attention to the heat of the pan. You want to sear the meat, not burn the peppercorns. And if you're a fan of seafood, ill give you a couple of recipes for the next date. One of which honestly got me laid that night.[Edited on March 25, 2010 at 12:24 PM. Reason : ]

I would personally go for salmon (on a bed of garlicky spinach) over steak.
3/25/2010 12:40:02 PM
don't do it up too nice this time, or else she'll start to expect it
3/25/2010 12:41:04 PM
Salmon will make your breath smell like cat food. Not the best item for a date.
3/25/2010 12:43:26 PM

3/26/2010 2:01:27 AM
^^I had to convince myself the thread was full of backwards savages as well when I saw that.Although cooking it in the pan is fine by me... but what's this bullshit about finishing it off in the oven? [Edited on March 26, 2010 at 2:42 AM. Reason : dd]
3/26/2010 2:42:04 AM
bullshit like ruth chris'?or lots of other steakhousesafaik[Edited on March 26, 2010 at 7:56 AM. Reason : although i think rc uses a salamandar or something]
3/26/2010 7:51:55 AM
dudeif youre not grillin, then duh you need a hot pan to sear the steak. everyone agrees on that, but you throw it in the oven relatively low for like 10 min (more or less based on size of steak) and you keep your sear, you get PERFECT medium rareness, you dont dry anything out, and the outside isnt burned. then you can deglaze the pan while the steak rests and jam out cool shit like the whole au poivre recipe.there's nothing wrong with cooking steaks indoors
3/26/2010 8:01:47 AM
There's everything wrong with cooking steaks indoors.(unless you're a restaurant)
3/26/2010 8:43:56 AM
seriously steintry it once, it's SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOODi was about to ask if you had ever made a pork tenderloin(in the same cooking fashion) but then i realized who i was talking to
3/26/2010 8:45:41 AM
I ran out of propane one night and then had to bring my steak inside. It was essentially seared on the grill and then moved to the oven.It was just disappointing. I need that flame-kissed flavor.
3/26/2010 8:49:31 AM
nah mang, you just need one good crust in a pan. and im not even sayin dont ever grill, just, know in your heart that steak inside can be as good as steak on the barbie (thats australian for grill)
3/26/2010 8:50:46 AM
GIVE ME MY BIG BOX OF FIRE OR GIVE ME DEATH!!!!!!
3/26/2010 8:54:01 AM
you gotta cook that thing in the oven so the fat tastes like scrambled eggs, word is bond
3/26/2010 8:58:58 AM
That doesn't sound appealing at all.(Note: I hate eggs. I like my chickens fully grown before they are slaughtered for my meals)(Read: I enjoy dining on the flesh of my enemies)
3/26/2010 9:01:11 AM
hahaI am a grill guy.But she does not have a grill at her apartment per rental restrictions. So I worked with what I had.
3/26/2010 9:02:13 AM
so, trip report?how'd it go?things come together fine?(the food)
3/26/2010 9:04:30 AM
things went very well. time crunch became worse because of traffic... she didn't get home from work until 7, I didn't get over there until 7:30, and we didn't sit down to dinner until 8:30.The Filet's wrapped in bacon au poivre went over very well... I ended up topping the steamed broccoli with a light cheese sauce, and made rosemary and garlic baby potatos in the oven. The salad was also a good call.We split a bottle of Cab Sav, nothing too expensive, but i can't remember the name of it off the top of my head.Overall her response was overwhelmingly positive. That's all I'm gonna say.
