I like asking christians what bunnies and eggs have to do with easter. Of course, they usually have no clue that these are really pagan customs borrowed by christianity in order to make converting to christianity less objectionable to them.

Some are actually aware of this, but most aren't. It's because most people are fucking sheep who don't question anything they do. If they were raised to do something they simply do it because "that's what good people do". I also love it when the christians around me scoff at the religious relics that people of other religious faiths keep, citing how clearly pointless and ridiculous they are, whilst simultaneously wearing a t-shaped symbol with a dead man's body on it or carrying some magical prayer beads around, or having figures of a supposedly birth giving virgin. I mean, I see people with rooms full of this shit scoffing at other people with rooms full of their religion's shit. It's amazing that they actually don't fucking get it. They understand how ridiculous religious beliefs are when they examine another religion from the outside, but they simply lack the balls or mental capacity to turn that analysis around on themselves. Like I said; fucking sheep son.

Bingo! ... Jesus never said a word about gays - actually, nothing was ever written by or about Jesus while he lived - but he did talk a lot of smack about rich people and hypocrites ....

well, if you believe in jesus, it follows that you would believe that he also ordained the entire bible. the christian response would be that paul didn't say those things about gay people, he merely relayed them to us from heavenly jesus.

Let me start this off by saying that Religulous is NOT a particularly good movie and does NOT put forth a good, coherent argument. The film fails in a number of ways, Bill Maher isn't exactly the brightest guy, he isn't good at putting forth clear arguments and I don't like the fact that he is a famous non-theist because he makes it look bad. Still, I love the part in the movie where black televangelist says "JESUS WAS WEARIN' FINE LINEN" and "THEY BROUGHT HIM GOLD!" when Maher brings up the whole jesus/poverty thing and the fact that this televangelist is wearing suits that cost more than some people's cars. He's like "I'm very blessed in that area. I'm blessed."

The whole time I wanted to tell him to shut up with the "blessed" crap, he just rips people off. I mean, come on, let's be honest here.

I am a conservative Methodist and I love calling out Catholics, all day long.

I remember in T101 we made groups of our interests/beliefs and there was a christian one, girls, boys, and then you had the Catholics they made their own group. Each group would go up in front of the class for questions. When the Catholics went up I had 5 back to back questions which caused a few of the girls to cry and P Dail to give me a nasty look

I like religion as an answer to "Why?" rather than an answer to "How?" which is best left to science.

As long as you understand that religion's answer to "why" is a non-answer, I'm ok with this assessment.

so people born rich can't ever ascend to enlightenment? I guess the 50 yrs Buddha devoted to teaching just go down the drain because he was a sheltered prince for the first 30 of his life. K

That post is the dumbest post ever to be quite honest. It's hardly impressive, as the fact that a bunch of people "thought about it" for a long time in the past is irrelevant with what we now know. They thought about it with far more limited knowledge, made ridiculous claims and speculations and thus came to ridiculous conclusions.

I'm really delusional.

I certainly think that neat phrases I come up with are eventually parroted on this website either the same day or a couple of days later. Certainly subconsciously... but they stick.

I also think that the things I say and care about promulgate out into the world and eventually get transmitted through a wider space. Either I'm the origin point or part of the conduit (I'm the origin point).

So... point's 1 and 3 ... about Buddhists and Muslims.

You're going to hear about that shit from some conservative asshole on Fox News or some douche bag liberal on NPR... whatever.

You're going to hear it and go, OH SHIT... I REMEMBER THAT GUY TALKING ABOUT THAT SHIT EARLIER

HE'S A GOLDEN RAY OF THOUGHT WASHING OVER ALL

"oh... and do people really say that? that the words of Paul are as important as Jesus? or do they just imply it? either was is pretty bad from their standpoint
"

Basically I look at it like this...Jesus is who I follow, so I'm gonna listen to what he said. I go to the Pauline Epistles when I'm just looking for some good advice. Cause really, that's what those are, they are advice to Paul wrote to different churches. It was him taking things Jesus said and then adding his own commentary to it. Yeah they are useful, but not as great as the things that Jesus actually said.

So basically I just follow Jesus's teachings of treat everyone the same, love everyone, don't go an attack your enemies, don't use the church to make money, pay your taxes and don't complain about them, etc.
Then of course the last thing Jesus said was for his disciples to go and make disciples of all nations and baptize them...so that is where the evangelical part of Christianity comes from.

and fyi...the evangelical means to tell the good news...not tell horrible bad news and scare them into wanting to be a Christian...so a lot of people are doing it wrong.

That's basically what I say. I am down with all science, I think science is great. I don't think there is much contradiction between both science and religion. I just say science tells us how and religion tells us who.
