I love awesome cars too much to drive an appliance car (or rather, exclusively drive an appliance car).

What I don't get is how most people in America spend WAY more than they should on cars, and STILL end up with something totally lame. I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with driving an Accord or whatever--if you're not a "car person", you're throwing money away by buying a Porsche.

...but if you make $40k/year, and you just want transportation, why in the hell would you buy a $20k-35k car, especially if you have to finance it? It baffles me.

You can get a nice as hell BMW for under $10K.. why someone spends $30K on an Accord that they have to finance I will never understand

they're not as lame as, say, a Camry...but they're fairly lame.

but that's fine--you can buy a 10 year old Volvo for peanuts. I'm sure they're not as cheap to operate as a 10-year old Toyota, but I think they're still a lot of bang for the buck. What I'm saying is that it blows me away when people pay half a year's salary (or a full year's salary ) for something that ultimately just amounts to basic transportation. I mean, it's not a "special" car like a Corvette, or BMW, or Porsche. If you just want decent transportation, go spend $7500 on a nice, used, 10-year old appliance car.

by the way, I like wagons, though (and I like Subarus in general)

but the maintenance on a bmw is so much more expensive than an accord or something. like IF you need a part fixed. but i guess that goes for volvos too which are on my list. sigh.

i would never get a brand new accord. though. i'm driving a 97 right now.

i do want an outback though hahaha.

It all depends on honestly what kind of vehicle I was getting.

If I were to trade in/sell my truck, I'd go for an SUV (probably a tahoe/yukon)

If I was buying a second vehicle as a daily driver, I'd probably either go cheap(er) sporty car (genesis, used corvette, used m3, vw, sti/evo (depending on year), etc...) or a slightly used luxury sedan (acura, caddy, bmw)

I don't think I will buy new again- depreciation is a bitch... it is kinda nice though to have had my truck 6 years and still have it not look that old (that's about it though)

I'm not saying that everyone should drive fast german stuff...i'm saying that it's dumb to pay through the nose for a car when you're not a car person to begin with.

when i got my accord in 2001 it was a 1997 and it was certified preowned (so only 4 years old) and it was like $13,000. and it had <40K miles on it

i thought it was a pretty good deal and not through the nose. i dunno though. i didn't buy it. and i'm not a car person so i have no clue. but i like it. its an accord EX too so it has leather, power locks/windows, sunroof, cd player (1 disc but whatev).

although now its over 10 years old and it needs to get fixed cause my bumper is falling off again and scratched cause someone pulled it away i guess when they were pulling out of a parking space next to mine

and now it has like 125,000 miles on it. but i still don't think that is TERRIBLE for a 13 year old car?!

my last bmw cost about $4200.. although it had a lot of miles on it. it had been stupidly well maintained though so it wasn't that bad

the current civic i paid $500 for and it took a few hours to fix

..the shop the person i bought it from had taken it into said it needed a new engine

Since you said no Toyotas and Nissans, and since the Honda Accord looks like shit:

Mazda 6 V6 (find a wagon or 5-door)
OR
MazdaSpeed 3
OR
Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback Ralliart
OR
Subaru Legacy 2.5GT (find a wagon) (pics below of 2009 b/c 2010 me no likey)
OR
Subaru Impreza 2.5GT 5-door
OR
Subaru WRX 5-door

(of course, if you have the money, get a German/Swedish/British/Italian car, or a Lexus/Infiniti/Acura)

Of course, if you would like to pick up a used car in the price range I posted new cars for ($25K - $30K), there are a million choices, and I am not about to go over them

in all honesty, qfred... I have a 2008 Pontiac G6 and I love it. It's roomy and runs really well, and wasn't expensive (I got it used but I mean, it was a former rental car so it was in really great shape)

you should look at them

I would love a legacy GT. My next car will be a e90 328i or a classic mustang though!

If you have a car that is reliable it's kind of silly to take loans on something new.

Especially LS3 powered Miatas son.

I love dat Miata son!

If only they offered the god damned Civic Type R here. I'd say to go for that, hands down. A U.S.-spec 4-door (Sedan) Civic Si is not a bad choice either though if you actually know how to drive son (The Si has a slightly less tuned K20, but it's still a great car son). It does require some work (High RPM action) to extract the performance out of it but that's the point son.

Ford Taurus. Not a bad daily driver - I've had one for a few years. Plenty of space in the back seats, big trunk, comfy seats.

Have you considered a Lacerne? Those things ride like a dream.

Some of these suggestions are downright embarrassing son.

Also note that the new Civic sedans are not particularly small IMO.

You'd do well to buy an Acura TSX or RL really. Those are good cars, with the TSX being a more fuel efficient ride.

i'm not opposed to getting a hybrid. you get labeled as being one of those guys but i can deal. also, harder to find used ones to cut down on the depreciation thing. and then the 75k miles you gotta drive it before the hybrid premium pays for itself. ideally, i'd wait until you can get a plug-in for under $30-35k but i dunno how long that will be
