I think it's more about ability to teach across disciplines--integrating aspects of multiple subjects to create a more well-rounded understanding of your own subject.

""We've got all these little children who aren't reading. You've got to clean up the classroom," he said.

"Get rid of the principal. Get rid of the staff. That's what you need to do," he continued."

-Judge Howard Manning

I began teaching in one of the schools Manning has decided to crack down on. Our students are pretty much the poorest of the poor in Durham, and are far below national standards, which is one of the reasons I went to that school, because I believed I could make a difference.

Last year (my first year there) our students showed significant growth, although the percent proficiency was measured to be less than average. This year, a significant portion of our staff has been cut due to the budget, and we are facing even more cuts. We haven't taken EOG's for this year yet, so I don't know what the data will show.

I do know that the teachers at the school are all using benchmark data to target students who are in danger of not passing, we are using every resource available to us, and a church comes in and tutors students. I am telling you right now, as a teacher at a school with low performing students, that getting rid of staff who are busting their asses every day is not going to solve the problem.

I'm not going to comment on student behavior, but their internal motivation is lacking to say the least.

HOLD THE PARENTS WHO ARE NEGLECTING THEIR CHILDREN ACCOUNTABLE.
