Yes there are. Tryouts are open, but the best cheerleaders from around normally have been "recruited." The coach does go to competitions and finds people that would be a good fit for the squad. Even when recruited you still have to go through the tryout process and make the team.

No those are not "JV" cheerleaders. There are two teams at State, Large co-ed (one guy puts up one girl) and small co-ed, which means 3 or 4 girls or 2 guys and a girl put up another girl as a group.

NC State has one of the best competitive teams in the country and the whole score sheet at tryouts is based on the skills you need to compete.

after the first picture i thought she was going to be cute. she's not, but those photos did remind me of how much i love carter-finley stadium... so there's that.
