http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tertiary_education_in_Australia

Quote :
" * Higher Doctorates, such as Doctor of Science (DSc) or Doctor of Letters (DLitt), which are awarded on the basis of a record of original research or of publications, over many years (often at least 10).

Australian Universities tend to award more named degrees than institutions in some other countries. Most Australian universities offer several different named degrees per a faculty. This is primarily for marketing purposes. Universities often try to outdo each other by offering the only degree titled with a popular major."

Is that what its referring to?

"Sorry, had to research a lot and found it... it's a D.Sc. (Doctor of Science) and is offered at some research universities in the US. I realize now why he said it's higher than a PhD in what he did... He got it in herpetology and I don't think you can get a PhD in herpetology in the US. But in other areas, the DSc is equivalent to a PhD so I guess I misunderstood part of what he said - my b"

It also might have been a buttload more worth of work. I know he was in Australia for 25 years or somethin.

Do you stay in the program the whole time, or do you just apply for the title after you've been working for 10 years and have some research under your belt?

^2 I'm not sure... from what I found it looks like you might have to be invited to even get one. I'll ask him that though

Quote :
"Why study the Doctor of Science?
The award is designed to give formal public recognition to eminent scholars who have made substantial, original and distinguished contributions to science knowledge"

Quote :
"The degree of Doctor of Science is awarded for independent and original research which constitutes a substantial and distinguished contribution to the knowledge and understanding of any branch of learning with which the Faculty is concerned. The candidate's work should demonstrate a high degree of innovative thinking in the development and testing of hypotheses and new investigative procedures, and should be recognised as such by the scientific community at large.

A qualifying period of ten years after completion of a first degree is required. In its initial stage an application for the award of the degree is considered as a prima facie case. If such a case is established, the candidate is invited to present a submission for examination."

Yeah after seeing that you can't even apply for one without having another degree and making crazy amounts of contributions for 10 years... that's pretty serious

Its starting to sound more like getting tenure than getting a degree, at least the way we think of degrees in the US.

I emailed him and this is how he explained it:

Quote :
"DSc meaning Doctor of Science. It is the British/Australian system and is awarded upon submission of a thesis indicating sustained contributions to a particular field, in my case, Herpetology. Usually it isn't awarded earlier than 9 years after the PhD. In some cases it is given to someone without a PhD if they have carried out the equivalent research as a PhD before embarking on a D Sc. My DSc thesis was 920 pages."

B.S. Aerospace Engineering.

If I don't become too busy flying jets and putting warheads on foreheads and then becoming an astronaut I will probably at least pursue my masters in Aerospace Engineering.

BA in Political Science
Minor in Business Management

M.B.A., Finance Concentration

I don't think I'll go back for anything but possibly a few certifications. No need for any higher degree. I suppose if I work hard enough and am lucky enough, I'd go to an Exec program if the company paid for it.

Equal opportunity dropout.

After many attempts in many fields at many schools, my next scholastic endeavor would be best described as undetermined if not automatically undermined.
