Gr'mtnsh: The elf's keen ears are the only thing that saved him from your axe's lethal arc. You've squandered the element of surprise, but then again, that is not your way. Now, he must face you. There's nowhere to hide, and unless someone figures out that door, nowhere to run. Of course, now you notice the long, curved dagger hanging at the elf's belt.

Toby: The half-orc's missing eye—of course! You recognize immediately the mark of Gruumsh. This brute is a devotee of that savage god, having gouged out his own eye to remake himself in Gruumsh's image! It occurs to you that according to legend, Gruumsh was blinded by Corellon, your elven god of magic. That may explain this fellow's ill will. Someone needs to do some fast talking...or at least some fast swinging.

Kronk: You hear a scuffle behind you. Perhaps the druid is reviving the madman. At any rate, your knuckles rap against the cool stone. A haunting voice fills the cave, spilling from every crevice: "Who seeks to disturb my tomb?"

Under other circumstances, nothing would have distracted me from battling this cur to the death - a sworn enemy of my kind. However, I have renounced much in my quest for love; I regard the half-breed as a misguided thug.

Keeping my hand on the dagger's hilt, mindful of the one who tried to cleave me, I briefly examine the runes. We need to determine how best to answer this booming voice, I doubt it can simply be ignored.

The image of the stone wavers and fades, like mud kicked up from a river bottom.

Gr'mtnsh: This queer hospitality is unnerving. If anyone disturbed the place of your dead, there would be blood. As a rule, wizards are not to be trusted, and that goes double for dead wizards.

Toby: The runes are no language you know, but their arcane significance is unmistakable. In their arrangement, you find some meaning. Beware the ordeal of Hashemka's tomb, they seem to say. No one man can survive.

Kronk: You find yourself in a narrow tunnel. The earthen floor slopes down, but you are accustomed to the hills of your homeland, and your feet are steady.

At irregular intervals, frames shore up the walls and ceiling. The wood seems soft and rotten, yet it holds. Insects crawl throughout holes chewed in the timber. The black carapaces of beetles glisten in the torchlight.

Sound is funny underground, but you think you can hear water. An underground stream?

Gr'mtnsh: The human ahead of you seems unafraid. Most likely, he's ignorant of the danger he's in. Maybe that's for the best, as soft and weak as his kind are.

For your part, the deep, dark of the earth calls up a vague ancestral memory of a great goblin-home. It's not exactly comforting, but it keeps your mind off the rumors you've heard of dark elves who make their lairs in secret places like this. And speaking of elves, there's one coming up behind you.

Toby: Kronk and the half-orc press on. Behind you, the warrior Billquisha lies unconscious. Will you leave him to find his freedom, or shall he join your band as well?

A slap with the force of a feather hitting a giant boulder awakens Billquisha. His eyes snap open as he coolly takes in his surroundings. Noticing that the nearby tunnel leads downwards, he grimly mutters, "It's go time", and begins the trek.

You follow the tunnel for quite some time. It's been minutes at least, maybe the better part of an hour. The slope has been steady, and there must have been some curve, as you no longer see the green glow from the portal behind you.

The wooden frames set in the dirt have given way to rock. At first, the walls are roughly hewn, but now they are almost polished. Torches sit unused in sconces every hundred paces.

Toby: Your eyes are sharp enough to see that the passage widens and splits into a fork ahead. Your party will soon be forced to choose a path.

Billquisha: These surroundings have not jogged your memory. It may be that the man who imprisoned you has long since fled this place. Your newfound comrades may know something of him, though.

As Kronk takes the left tunnel and rounds the next bend he sees the strangest sight he's ever seen. The tunnel opens to a giant room and in the center of the room is a swirling purple vortex that seems to be sucking in air towards it's center.

What do you do?

I turn to Toby, about to ask him if he knows who imprisoned me in this cursed cave, when I see the vortex. I freeze, not from the sight of the strange phenomenon, but from the memories it brings. The man who trapped me was purple too! Probably from the purple people of the far North mountains. A single tear courses down through my unkempt beard, getting absorbed in its hoary fibers before it reaches the end of the beard.

Just to set expectations, I'm generally running this thread when it's slow at work.

Kronk: You start down the lefthand path. The earthen floor gives way to smooth, cornflower tile. The color is surprisingly bright beneath the thick layer of dust that covers it, and it's especially bright in little spots that lie in a...line...oh. You recognize the tiny, three-toed footprints of kobolds. They continue down the hall and into the darkness beyond the last of the sconces.

You've run into kobolds before. They're quick, vicious little reptilian scavengers whose primitive society has something in common with your own barbarian people.

Toby: About the time Kronk steps onto the strange blue tile, you recognize the shade as being the same as a particular kind of sapphire dust useful in the casting of illusions. You ask yourself the obvious question: Say, I wonder if that's a tra—

Gr'mtnsh: The madman Billquisha has been overcome by some sort of trance. Your orcish sensibilities suggest he's a liability, yet your human ones compel you to come to your fellow's aid.

If slackerb wants to come up with other illusions, I'll say they automatically affect Billquisha (who has obviously lacked the strength of will to avoid enchanting magicks before), and the rest of you can roll a six-sided die to represent your chance to resist. On an even number, your senses pierce the illusion, but on an odd number, you are utterly fooled by it. You may respond to slackerb's illusions without having to wait for me to narrate.
