Ours was out of freon. I'm still recovering I think from the trauma of not having AC on three 100 degree days. Our unit still fucking blows since the upstairs is 10 degrees hotter than the downstairs. Stupid one-unit/one-thermostat houses.

I had a similar situation when I rented a house here in Greensboro. AC broke on a Friday night. I called the emergency line and they said that it was only considered an emergency if the temperature was above 100 degrees, so I would have to wait until Monday. The temperatures were in the mid-90s so I thought that was pretty much a bullshit policy. So I went and bought a window AC unit to get through the weekend.Dude comes out that Monday and determines he needs another part to fix it, and couldn't get it for a couple days. All in all I was without AC for 6 days during a heatwave, where temps were hitting the mid to upper 90's during the day. I got no reimbursement from the property management company because temps never reached 100.And to top it all off, I got a nasty ear infection that the Dr. attributed to moisture coming from the window AC unit.

My A/C kept freezing over . . it needed freon. In the interim I had a fan blowing directly into the intake and had the fan on the thermostat set to "on" as opposed to "auto" until they could fix it. If it froze over, I turned the A/C off but left the fan component running to defrost it. This also meant that it ran continuously but it ran continuously regardless. Checked filters once a week and vacuumed them off between replacing them.ALSO who the HELL thought that it was a good idea to put the thermostat where the wash and dryer are is dumb. I couldn't even dry my clothes without it getting up to 80something degrees. The A/C unit is 25 years old and said that they would not replace it unless the compressor went. It's not freezing over anymore but it still can't keep up very well. I don't care as it gets down to at least 73 degrees which feels like heaven compared to what it was. I like how the model apartment unit that i'm right next to has a brand spanking new unit . Maybe i'll just camp out in there for awhile, it's all nicely furnished and everything [Edited on June 29, 2010 at 10:35 AM. Reason : .]
