Rich--if you lost your job tomorrow, you could live the rest of your life without having to take another job, sell/reverse mortgage your home, etc. This means having an obviously substantial sum of money, but not necessarily in liquid form--it can be tied up in real estate, non-volatile investments, etc. Just having a big retirement account or pension doesn't qualify unless you're old enough to use it. Just having a big income doesn't, to me, make you rich--you could be making 200K+ per year, which for a single person puts you in the "can afford pretty much whatever you want without thinking about it" category a lot of responses are using as a definition, but unless you're sitting on a big pile of cash, if you're out of a job for a couple of years you're still selling your house and your stuff. That's not rich to me. You can be making a moderate salary and, with wise investment and money management, be rich by middle age. This definition pretty much precludes anyone young from being rich unless they have a big inheritance or trust fund or a multimillion dollar athlete/entertainer income, and I'm OK with that. Rich==secure.Poor: Any of: Unsure if you can make your rent/mortgage payments to keep a roof over your head (assuming your payments are reasonable, taking a job/income hit and no longer being able to afford your McMansion doesn't make you poor...). Defaulting on loans. Being unable to afford basic necessities like nutritious food, electricity, and water. On welfare or food stamps. Insecure, at a very immediate level.

wow, there are some awfully low standards of "rich" in this thread, and to an extent, some very high standards of "poor."
