The only way I can force my brain into neutral is to clear my mind and think about it being entirely empty. That usually does the trick.

Go for a long run/walk at around 9pm. Being physically tired will undermine the nervous energy that keeps you awake.

work out. Seriously. I used to have insomnia issues when I was little. I would do stupid amounts of situps until I was worn out and panting or about to break a sweat. Just relax and you should sleep pretty well...

Try a brain dump - right before bed get a stack of unlined paper and write down everything that enters your mind until it's empty. Go directly to bed (don't read it). If still up in 20 minutes, repeat. Or take some drugs.
