i used to be all sleepy and depressed at night. was also anxious all the time and had crazy mood swings. but i think it was a different kind of chemical imbalance.after almost passing out at work one day, i had some bloodwork done and it turns out my blood sugar was way off. moderate to severe hypoglycemia. changed some eating habits and i'm starting to feel better and last longer before knocking off at night. just in case anyone feels the same way, maybe check out hypoglycemia symptoms and go get checked out. i'm amazed to be awake so late tonight

i have a problem getting sad and then binge eating at night. it only happens after it gets dark out. i've done it since i was a kid. never could explain it or treat it with any type of anti-depressent or change in behaviors. i dunno what it is.

I get depressed in the winter. It's called seasonal affective disorder (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seasonal_affective_disorder) and it's supposedly due to lower light levels. This might have something to do with what you're experiencing. I think I'm really sensitive to light/dark cycles because if I sit in a dimly lit room at my home, I get really depressed.

You guys probably get depressed at night 1. because you're alone, roommates are asleep, whatever2. because your body is producing melatonin at night which makes you tired, sluggish, etc. 3. because you're not active and dopamine reserves are essentially filling back up. 4. possibly a lack of Vitamin Dpeople also get winter depression for the lack of sunlight (vitamin d) and studies show that suicide is much more prevalent the closer you live to the Arctic Circle because the night/day lengths are much more pronounced. i.e. 18 hours of daylight in the summer and 18 hours of darkness in the winter.If you are seriously dealing with night depression issues I'd try to wake up very early, maximize the sunlight you get in a day, do exercise to release endorphins, get tired as hell and fall asleep before your roommates do hahaif all else fails, smoke pot

Just weighing in for Bridget. I have depression brought on by an anxiety disorder which is very specifically focused around when it's nighttime. I've had it since I was a kid, and definitely had roots in sleepless nights I had as a kid from an allergic reaction to a sleep medication (yeah, that IS stupid) combined with my fear of the dark (which I still have). I have ongoing treatment for it and it's definitely helped. The depression obviously has to be treated, but my personal anxiety is definitely emotional and psychological, and I've found personal routines that help me minimalize it and slowly get over it--which may help just as much as anything else.
