I've been going out there for 10 + years, as said before, do NOT try it in a 2wd anything, you will get stuck and have a bad day.I was disappointed when the town took over the north end. Before the town took it over access was free, the people using the beach were a bit more unruly, mostly fishermen and high school / college crowd. On occasion there were some idiots speeding up and down the beach at night, doing donuts etc. However, now since the town legitimized the place and installed "facilities" the fishermen have mostly left, and the college crowd can't afford it, the beach is packed almost every day with yuppies getting stuck. There is no place to camp unless you want to get run over, all the dunes are fenced off (before you could walk / camp around the dunes which broke the wind and provided a bit of privacy). For $20 / day I expect an actual bath / shower facility like they have down by Ft. Fisher, not some shady unlit portajohns. Oh, and my favorite part since the town taking over is the police driving around at 6 AM blasting sirens at every single tent to check for receipts to show payment. For me, that was the last straw and haven't been back in over 2 years.[Edited on July 11, 2010 at 10:45 PM. ^^Agreed. Fuck the North End! I live in Kure Beach and don't know any locals who still go up there. $20 is just rediculous to have to pay to put up with all the freakin tourists, people who don't know how to drive in the sand, guys that don't know how to fish, cops crawling all over etc. etc. etc. Gah I miss the old days when that beach was free

If you want a fun camping experience, take a boat over to Masonboro or one of the islands in the cape fear river and camp there. You will be secluded from dickhead cops and yankee tourists.
