I appreciate its utility as a demonstrative epithet and certainly use it on occasion. Like anything popular it can and will be misused and overused. at least it's not something so godawful as the bastardization of "crucial." I actually find myself avoiding using the word even when it's completely appropriate to avoid being mistaken for a wigger sympathizer.[Edited on September 9, 2010 at 10:20 PM. Reason : asdf]

My mom says this all the time when she wants to appear like she doesn't really care and isn't letting something get to her, but in fact is stewing on the inside over the event and wants to snap someone's neck

It's not totally useless. How about this: "Well, this situation sucks, but that's reality, so I guess we'll just have to deal with it." It's a way of expressing that the situation is what it is, and the need to react accordingly persists.
