Who has the best quantity of minoes in the raleigh area?
3/17/2011 7:26:32 PM
been doing some shore fishing out at lake raleigh, without any luck. Anyone else had luck here before? If so where, and what were you using.Or if anyone has any good fishing spots near campus that they would be willing to share, it'd be greatly appreciated. (Feel free to pm if its a secret spot you want to share)
3/17/2011 10:42:00 PM
Only way I ever caught anything at lake raleigh was to take my canoe. Caught some decent bass and some huge crappie. Crappie bit near the surface at dusk during summer months.
3/17/2011 11:07:01 PM
I caught the 2 thin long fish off the pier a few weekends ago.

A customer called in to work today and after he placed his order he started to talk to me. He was from Montana. Anyway, I said something about how when I go fishing...the dude was floored. He was like it still amazes me that girls in the south like to go fishing. It's so hard to find a chick around here that likes to fish.Just something random I would like to share.
3/18/2011 12:02:28 AM
thanks for the advice NeuseRvrRatYou know of any decent places near campus that I might have a bit more luck?

Go hit the lakes(ponds) out at Umstead Park. They are excellent producers year round for crappie and bass. They do not get a ton of pressure, so it is pretty easy fishing. Once it warms up they will also open the boathouse where you can rent canoes. Just dont eat any of the fish (Crabtree Creek PCBs)
3/18/2011 8:01:36 AM
im gonna hit lassiter mill, another really good fishign spot, lassiter mill is part of crabtree creek so dont eat the fish but feel free to wade, thats what ill be doing and then im gonna creep back up to durham to hook into some white bass at Pennys bend.and something i noticed yesterday, if you are fishing small ponds be aware that it may be the case that the fish have already spawned and the females are back in the deep water. at my secret pond i noticed a plethora of bass and bluegill fry, meaning i completely missed the spawn as was evidenced by the amount of dink males i was catching.small ponds are on a different time scale than large systems as they warms up and cool off faster[Edited on March 18, 2011 at 12:41 PM. Ill be out at the confluence of the Eno and Little right past Pennys Bend tomorrow. Hope to slay some white bass and take them home for a grease bath. If you see me in my old yellow canoe give me a shout.

3/20/2011 12:32:14 PM
no i didnt tie that wooly bugger i stocked up at great outdoor provisioni havent had time to sit down and tie shit in a while, but while at GOP i bought some white materials to mimic the one in the picturethe one thing i cant figure is how the pictured bugger has little red dots on the marabou tail. I like that but i dont know how to replicate it, maybe a marker?

Went out this evening and caught a few bass and some bream and crappie. Bass havent been biting well this week either that or nothing in my tackle box is to their liking. Found some things that pretty much catch smaller crappie easily so if all else fails I just go with that so I'm catching something.
3/23/2011 8:49:28 PM
you better be frying those crappie
3/23/2011 10:19:46 PM
^I've got about two pounds of fried crappie and brim in my freezer right now.
3/23/2011 10:24:02 PM
why did you fry it before freezing it?and it's "bream"
3/23/2011 10:25:02 PM
Brim or Bream, to each his own. Already fried because it was left over from a feast a few weeks ago. I throw some old bay on them and pop in the oven until they get crispy again.

I never keep any fish I catch or at least havent in a long ass time. I just enjoy getting out there and catching something while enjoying the nice weather.
3/24/2011 10:16:29 AM
im tryng to get my girl into fishing, its roughbut im luring her in with beautiful locales, and bringing a spare rod around...shes outfished me once or twice, and i let her borrow my fly rod and taught her very basic fly casting, taught her when to strike when the fish took the fly and how to strip the line to play the fish and so she actually caught her first fish on a fly rod. I was so happy because i figured shed be all into itbut nah, shes doesnt care either way she just wants to be with me.now the important thing is that she lets me fish 4 or 5 hours at a time. now THATS what matters^I am learning that full catch and release is a bad philosopy especially in small ponds. The problem is i never bring anything to keep fish as im fishing but I am getting better about that, ill snag vines off trees or what not. ive just been reading articles and im realizing it is more healthy to remove mid-sized fish as much as possible
3/24/2011 11:49:23 AM
think Falls Lake water will be too muddy to fish today with all the rain on saturday???
4/11/2011 3:51:50 AM
i can guarantee it won't be too muddy to fishit may, however, be too muddy to catch fish

taking the new (to me) boat down to the coast this weekend. if the wind doesn't blow hard, we'll try sea mullets and grays in the turning basin and maybe drum in the haystacks if that doesn't work out. if it's windy, we'll try for specks and drum in slocum.
4/11/2011 9:24:27 PM
I take it that I'm not supposed to go fishing after a storm like that....That's all I was looking forward to all week Stupid tornado
4/17/2011 1:14:22 PM
sunday was a beautiful day for fishing except for the water being so damn churned up and murky from saturday's weather. we fished slocum sunday morning and didn't catch anything.
4/18/2011 9:06:39 AM
I went out to Lake Raleigh on Saturday morning and again on Sunday. Ended up catching 4 on Saturday on a buzzbait and two on sunday on texas rigged lizards. The fishing was a lot better than the other times I have been out there.
4/18/2011 10:47:42 AM
from a boat or from that dock?
4/18/2011 10:52:15 AM
From a boat, took out the Gheenoe and a trolling motor. Was flipping in and around the pads and grass that are all along the shallow shorelines. Didnt notice any red tails on them, but i would assume that they have already moved up to spawn.Gonna head back out after work today and try a few more patterns, I knocked the prop off the trolling motor yesterday and had to paddle all the way back in. I sure am glad i wasnt out at Falls Lake. I had planned ahead and packed a spare prop, just forgot to pick up an extra shear pin.
4/18/2011 10:58:44 AM
the motorguide great white bow mount that came with my boat has a spare prop nut, prop nut wrench, and two shear pins that store in the trolling motor base mount thing.
4/18/2011 11:04:06 AM
That is nice. That is a pretty awesome boat you picked up. I need to quit buying all these canoes and small boats and pick up something like that. I do mostly bass fishing, but I have been redfish and trout fishing a bunch these past few years and a boat like that seems like it would be perfect for something like that. Last time it happened we were out duck hunting and breaking ice and we ended up having to walk the boat along the shore in waist deep ice and water for a few miles. That prompted me to buy replacement props, but since i am cheap i just bought locknuts instead of the prop nut. The shear pin hadnt broken off, so i just left it there. Lesson learned, extra shear pins bought on lunch break, boat loaded and checked, will be on the water 15 min after work

Headed out of Sneads Ferry Thursday and hooked up with some Bonito and False Albacore. Went bottom fishing and caught dozens of nice Black Sea Bass. Did a little diving on some new ledges I found and saw a good number of gag grouper, black sea bass and sheepshead milling around. My neighbor also had a monster cobia come up to his boat, but it wouldn't bite. Water is 62 degrees and the fish are finally showing up!!!

Fished Lake Raleigh for a few hours after work yesterday. Got skunked. I have been trying to focus on flipping all of the hydrilla mats out there, but man is it annoying to have to slap weeds off my lure after every retrieve. I went and picked up a couple weedless frogs to try out. I have never fished grass or hydrilla much, so this is all a learning experience for me. Anybody have any advice for flipping frogs? Is it too early in the year for them? Will they only work early morning/late evening like a buzzbait?Im heading back out there today and prob every afternoon for a while now that the weather is good and the spawn has begun. I have an extra spot in the boat and plenty of rods if anybody wants to join me.

So yesterday i got out and did a little fly fishing on the Eno for the first time in liek 2 weeks since i had MRSA on my kneeTell me if this shit has ever happened to you guysI cast to a spot and a small bluegill or robin took my fly, and as soon as i started to play it, out of freaking nowhere this 2-2.5 pound bass fuckin nails that son of a bitch and starts heading down river. The water was a little high from the weekend and flowing pretty good so i tried to play it as carefully as i could, i might have let it run longer than i needed to but the current made this fish seem more like a 3-4 pound bass. just as I really declouded my min and got my wits together the line snapped and the fish got awayits funny because i was totally unprepared to land a big fish, id been catching sunfish and small crappie, i landed that little fish in about 5 inches of water and i never saw that fuckin bass lurking at all lol so no lie, i was fumbling and paniced because i couldnt quite recall where all the structure was that that fish might try to get into....but that shit was cool as fuck! I mean the bass came out of nowhere and fuckin slammed that fishalso, upon investigation the reason why my line snapped was because i had about 2 or 3 knots in my tippet, i knew about this for many fishing trips but my lazy ass never felt like changing the leader because i havent been targeting large fish, so i took of what was left and attached fresh knot-free tippetalways maintain your equipment!it aint too early to be flipping frogs, theres so many yearling creatures right now fish are probably feeding on all of them, The surface is where its at right now for sure i dont normally go the frog route when i spin fish but i love the zara and super spooks, zara puppies as well as suspended minnow crankbaits and floating plastic worms if im working surface with the spinning rod those are my go tos[Edited on April 19, 2011 at 2:21 PM. i've had lots of fish bitten in half by blues on the way to the boat. gray trout, spots, sea mullet, etc. the grays often feed under schools of blues because of the dead bait that the blues let fall.i've also had kings bitten in half by barracuda and sharks.
