Any place that has $1 night is ok in my book... so PB's isn't shitty to me!My vote goes to either Katmandu, Shitty Limits, or Sammy's
2/14/2011 11:41:26 PM
Man Katmandu must have gone downhill...I haven't been there in a long time but when it first opened up it was a pretty chill spot.
2/15/2011 12:06:03 AM
When I lived there from 03-05 the sucky bars were:JaxJackpotCity LimitsSadlack's (sp?)Mitch'sSammy'sRuckusOxygenFereinheitThe OfficeCoulda been the crowd I hung with, but man those places blew [Edited on February 15, 2011 at 12:09 AM. Reason : asdf]

I hated Jax. are we just naming the dive bars or ones that are just shitty to go to? the dive-iest bar is definitely The Goat.the shittiest bar is definitely 606. Fucking jerk-off bouncers, lines for no crowd. Obnoxiously loud music, high prices and a bunch of Yankee's or the especially sad Southerner that thinks he or she is a Yankee.
2/15/2011 12:44:47 AM
lol at KatmanduI used to live near there and I loved it. But then, I like a bar that isn't crowded at all so I can get to know the staff, get drinks quick and cheap, and command that the television be changed to suit my whims.Actually I worked there as security for more than a year under the first two managers. Back then we kept it pretty clean, anyway. And yes, I am painfully aware of the irony of me working as security anywhere that isn't occupied entirely by quadriplegics.

Quality drinking times to be had at Mitch's. That is the opposite of a shitty bar
2/15/2011 1:08:37 AM
^Yeah, seriously, how could a competent person put Mitch's on that list?
2/15/2011 1:09:39 AM
idk Mitch's is good times

I want to change my answer... Pi Bar

Mitch's is great. The only people who wouldn't like it are subliterate morons who can't enjoy any place that doesn't cram them up against a crowd of whores in hopes that they might cop a feel.
2/15/2011 1:19:17 AM
^^closed a while ago. G Patel's failure. I guess some of y'all would argue the Oxford is too. now it's some sports bar called The Pack House (I think). Doomed for failureshould turn that place into a strip club like it used to be.
2/15/2011 1:19:22 AM
Sadlack's, Mitch's and Ruckus are all decent to goodKatmandu is crawling with roaches and the regulars are pretty creepy
2/15/2011 2:08:07 AM
How can anyone say Mitch's is shitty? Mitch's is Awesome! Every university has it's traditional resturants/bars that are a part of the school's culture. At NC State we have Mitch's, the Players Retreat, Amedeo's, and Two Guys. Mitch's and Two Guys are even on the NC State monopoly board because they are so famous. As for Shitty bars...I vote for Locked and Loaded in Garner. It's a lame Garner bar with no good beers.

Mitch's is a really chill bar. Except for the oil paintings on the wall that look like they're from the damn Haunted Mansion ride at Disney
2/15/2011 9:22:11 AM
Haha I love those creepy paintings. Gives the place character.
2/15/2011 9:39:31 AM
I think people should list places and then the reasons they don't like these places.ie:Sammy's - I guess because it is over priced and service isn't all that great. But he has really cleaned up the bar and their patio is awesome, so it is not longer on my shit list (though, I'm sure Sammy is still a doucebag). PBs - it's a keg party at a "bar" and a lot of kids go there, get too drunk, and act like assholes... but you don't go there not expecting this. I do admit, it is at the bottom of my list of bars though.Deep South - now from what i've heard, the people who own/run/bartend/etc are douchenozzles, which might make a bar a real deal shittiest bar contender. I think service is the main thing that makes a bar shitty (the bars I like to go to the most, I get the best/friendliest/respectful service at). All the Stuff on Glenwood South - I could care less. I have been to some and had a good time, and other times been completely put off. That was more about the people who were there (and there are dickheads and bitches everywhere). but I avoid that area for the most part. But I also can't say the entire street is shitty. I have liked tobacco road when I went, same for havanah's. And all the other places change so often it's hard to form a true opinion. EV - it's a fratastic college bar right next to campus... but I have no problem with that. I don't have a problem with traditional frat guys. For the same reason I don't really have a problem with hipsters. If someone comes up to me and tries to tell me I'm doing something wrong, my beliefs are wrong, etc... then we will have a problem- but if they want to sit at their table and drink a beer, who the fuck cares? Has a popped collar sperry wearing young republican ever come over and kicked sand on you at the beach? no- at most they haven't let you into a party, and that is fine, because it is their party. just don't let them into yours. The Goat/Ugly Monkey - haha one is a neighborhood dive bar and the other is owned by the same guys attempting to get the same kind of feel closer to downtown (which is "let's get drunk, not care about the decor, and have some fun"). Those kind of bars are a blast, as long as you aren't sitting there trying to nit-pick every thing going on. I will admit, the Goat did have some problems with some "thugs" coming in and peddling shit in the lobby, but from what I hear, they have gotten that mostly cleaned up. tl,dr : Dive bars are what they are- they can be great, they can be shitty, but don't go in expecting a fancy dance club and then call it shitty because some band you never heard of is playing, and the fanciest beer they serve is Sierra Nevada. oh, and this is all subjective. CHEERS
2/15/2011 9:40:24 AM
I didn't go to Mitch's for a LONG time because of Mitch himself. I had a couple friends that worked there and I heard so many horror stories about what an epic dick he is to work for that it put a bad taste in my mouth for the place. Recently started going again, cool with the place now I suppose since I don't really know anyone that works there well enough to care about how much they hate the job
2/15/2011 10:16:58 AM
Their food is just so bland (except the chili) and it was the first place to ban smoking so I was never a huge fan. Never hated the place though. Had no problem meeting a professor or classmates there for a beer or 2
2/15/2011 10:21:04 AM
I don't think Ugly Monkey is that bad. It's not the nicest place but it's not trying to be. I also may have a highly elevated opinion of this place because the last time I was there it was $1 mystery beer night and I was like 100% on getting good beer.I also like East Village which is weird because a lot of types of people I hate go there. But it's like everyone is able to put aside their differences and be decent to each other. I've never really seen anything bad happen there. Definitely not in the running for shittiest bar.
2/15/2011 10:29:52 AM
I like Mitch's grape leaf platter. I also like the Rodolfo's Feast. Really those are the only two things on their menu I bother with.I had many a good night on EV's porch back in the day. Never really understood the hate for that place.
2/15/2011 10:33:29 AM
I think because it's perceived as a frat bar and that's only half true. There are a lot of fratty dudes there but there are also a lot of normal people there. I generally do not get along with frat guys at all but the people who hang out at EV either tone it down or maybe just look like frat guys. Like I said, I've never seen anything bad happen there which I can't say for just about any other bar I've been to.

I'm in Mitch's way too damn much. I average between 2 and 3 visits a week.
2/15/2011 11:35:05 AM
does bland = not deep fried and battered in salt?
2/15/2011 11:36:19 AM
Nah, bland means dry bread, no flavor to sauces, and dry meatsI do like their salads and soups though, but I like that almost anywhere. Chili is nice on a rainy day[Edited on February 15, 2011 at 11:48 AM. Reason : u]
2/15/2011 11:46:00 AM
The only thing I hated about Mitch's was their bartender was slow as shit during the hike, quite a few times... It should not take you 5 minutes (literally) to pour 4 rum and cokes
2/15/2011 11:55:31 AM
I feel bad for East Village, I think they lost the frattier parts of their crowd to The Point and Nelson's. it's usually dead now. I've always been a fan though. cheap beer and cheap food.
2/15/2011 11:56:39 AM
I almost always get the soup there so I hear what you're sayingand sometimes their Cuban is a touch drybut I like the food and appreciate that it is reasonably priced and reasonably healthy
2/15/2011 11:57:25 AM
2/15/2011 12:02:52 PM
lol 606. I'm surprised that "club" is still open. I never see anyone in there since Haven was bought out by them. And Haven was a decent "club", even though it was still on the low end of "cool shit to do in Raleigh" list. But to be fair, "Cool shit" in Raleigh is about 3 places
2/15/2011 1:08:28 PM
I understand every place is slow during the hike, but when it takes you 5 min or more to make 4 rum and cokes (not including ringing the customer up), that's ridiculous. It was pushing half an hour when we finally got our beers. It probably didn't help that she also moved slow as hell during I'd imagine one of the busiest nights of the year for them...
2/15/2011 2:12:08 PM
why would you think a bar is shitty based on something that only happens 3 times a year?
2/15/2011 3:01:29 PM
Because she doesn't seem to be terribly bright.---Perhaps I should actually answer the thread question. I always hated Jax, but its dead and so it doesn't count.Never really could stand EV. Me and the fraternity crowd have not historically been bosom pals. Last time I tried to go a drunk frat boy scared off the women with whom I was having a good conversation, which was followed immediately by a homosexual hitting on me. Normally I wouldn't care, but this one was not attractive. It was insulting. But for me a shitty bar is really any one that's too crowded for me to move, too busy for me to get a drink in a timely fashion, and too loud for me to conduct a conversation. I like to talk over my drinks, not shove and grope and whatever it is that people call "dancing" these days.
2/15/2011 3:09:05 PM
I'm going to go ahead volunteer Mosaic. Overpriced cheap import beer and the whole place smells like feet and douchery.
2/15/2011 3:12:00 PM
2/15/2011 3:13:06 PM
^^while i'd agree mosaic is overpriced, i do think the place has a pretty cool vibeand i've never been when there when it wasn't flourishing with quality trim
2/15/2011 3:14:48 PM
hmm, i didn't think mosaic was that bad. they have some nice seating options, good for making moves on girls.also, the spring/fall music fests are amazingly fun times, assuming you're into electronica.[Edited on February 15, 2011 at 3:16 PM. Reason : .]
