I think students need ot be trained to bum rush the shooter from all sides. 1 or 2 will get hit (which would have happened anyway), but the rest get to beat the ever living shit out of the shooter.

Someone mentioned bullying earlier and I think that goes to the root cause of this incident. All of these school shooters have that as a common link.Bullying is tolerated or given a blind eye in schools. Kids are coddled and told everything they do is great by adults, but kids are honest and cruel. Because of this constant "Pussification" of this nations kids they don't develop the skills (thick skin) to deal with any sort of criticism. Eventually these kids reach a breaking point and go on a rampage.guns are used because they are easy to get. If there were no guns they would use something else.
2/27/2012 6:48:20 PM
Did all the other kids with the pumped up kicks run? Run? Outrun his gun?

I don't think bullying is tolerated or given a blind eye. It is simply a very difficult problem to address, and really requires a huge support system to prevent. I mean, a certain amount of tension in inherent in child relationships. Hell, it's part of adult relationships. For teachers and administrators to step in when every insult or comment of any kind is made is unrealistic, but often it's the accumulation of these little things which cause problems. You also have some people who are tougher skinned than others, and some people who are nicer than others. It's a continuum, which makes zero tolerance policies very hard to apply. I worked hard when I was teaching to address issues immediately, but given the amount of time that students spend away from the teachers, it's really hard to deal with.

He only shot 5 people and didn't even save a bullet for himself? What an amateur. Kid should have taken notes from than honky in Norway.[Edited on February 27, 2012 at 11:21 PM. Reason : He looks about 15 though, so he'll be out of jail with a clean record in 10 years or so.]
2/27/2012 11:19:40 PM
So we all agree that bullying has always happened. Is it worse today than 10 or 20 years ago? I don't think so. Or, are there no places for bullied kids to turn to? I had my parents and other family. What did this kid have.
2/27/2012 11:21:37 PM
Bizarre stuff -- I grew up in Solon OH (NE ohio suburb) which is a short drive away. Im not going to get all sentimental or anything as I'm old and knew no one at Chardon, but still a little freaky deaky.
2/27/2012 11:22:12 PM
I've often wondered how many people I could kill if I were to go on a school shooting.Like really planned it out.I'd probably try and find a building with the least amount of exits and chain them shut. Then go from room to room.If armed correctly, and there was no firearm resistance from inside the building.I'd think I could pick off at least 20, maybe 30.Unless we had some leakage out the windows and some potential victims escaped.

There was bullying in my school. Even in front of the teachers. I remember these kids were mooing at a really big girl and she ran off crying. The teacher started screaming and yelling about anti-bullying stuff. The kids just laughed at him.She later died of a drug overdose. The teacher got fired for throwing a chair.I remember after he gave his speech the kids did all sorts of shit, he was a science teacher. They threw condoms down his sink, separated the board the kept the male and female mice apart, threw out the experiment crap. It was trouble.I was bullied because I was the new kid in the school but I quickly learned to deal with it by not reacting to it, they realized it wasn't fun and went to others who would get riled up. Not a hard concept and certainly no reason to get a gun. These kids need coping skills and a swift kick in the ass by some parents.
2/27/2012 11:25:51 PM
What is bizzarre or freaky deaky about someone shooting people? It happens all the time in one of the most violent nations on the planet that we live in.
2/27/2012 11:26:34 PM
What's even more bizarre is that it seems to always be white kids who go on these school shootings.
2/27/2012 11:28:22 PM
I wouldn't survive public education if I had to go back and do it again.
2/27/2012 11:28:32 PM
Thats because they don't call it a school shooting when black kids get shot. They call it gang violence.

a 3rd kid died today. it's a reminder of all the kids that will die today so senselessly and that we won't hear about or know. I was bullied and teased a lot after I moved down south. I was called a bunch of names like yankee or carpetbagger, so I had to teach myself how to lose my northern accent etc, but that all was pretty tame. Then in high school I was incessantly called a slut and dirty things like that, there was stuff written about me in notes passed around (even though I was a virgin under well into college) and then some girl named me Toucan Sam and that spread like wildfire and it took me two nasal surgeries (one rhinoplasty) to get rid of that But there were people, teachers and other students who were supportive at New Bern HS and that helped with my experience of bullying. The slut stuff really affected me though.
2/28/2012 1:39:09 PM
^ your story reminds me of the one about the girl from England who moved to Massachusetts and those girls called her slut and dirty names and she killed herself

Kids were pretty fucking harsh and I dont think telling a kid it's okay to be yourself is creating a problem. I think a lack of boundaries and serious consequences for their actions is creating a feeling of invincibility. I didn't even think of picking up a gun to solve my problems. Kids say shit for a reaction and then forget about it when they find their next victim. Though maybe these shootings will teach bullies that the reaction they get may be a gun blowing in their face. Who the hell knows. It's sad though, the shooter must've been close to manage to kill 3 out of 5, it's very sad.

I was bullied too, moreso in high school than middle school. I had just moved to NC so I got the new kid crap too. Same as others have said, I had a good family that I knew loved me. They didn't always know what I was going through at school but if I was ever having dark thoughts I would like to think my high school self would have confided in them. HS was shitty in general because we moved I was really angry & missed all my friends. However, not much has been said in this thread ab the online & cell phone aspect of this. When most of us were in HS you had dial up Internet (if anything at all) & you didn't have time to fuck with people between waiting for web pages to load & checking everyone's AIM status. I know texting wasn't a huge thing in HS & I forgot my cell half the time & not everyone had one that they carried to school. Something about the bullying following kids home from school, in their pocket on their cell phone & shit people can talk on the Internet, I can't imagine not being able to escape that stuff. At least when I went home I wasn't being harassed. I think many of us in have a hard time understanding that.
