Are they cancelling flights into RDU? Someone at my job just called in to say their flight has been cancelled. Seems we're far enough from the hurricane for it to be safe.
10/29/2012 10:29:31 AM
^we're okay but there's a cascade effect a lot of times. If a plane or crew that was supposed to arrive in RDU and fly out later doesn't make it in the RDU flight gets cancelled too potentially
10/29/2012 10:34:29 AM
Yes they are canceling flights in and out of RDU. One of my coworkers is supposed to leave for a business trip to SFO tomorrow morning and they've already canceled her flight even though none of her flights go remotely close to airports affected by the storm. Problem is even if you're not flying up to for example NY, there's a good chance the plane that's supposed to take you wherever you're going was supposed to arrive in RDU from NY.

Under the last several building codes, houses in Raleigh and west are built to withstand 90-100mph winds, houses along the coast are between 120-130mph. I would imagine that the coastal homes that are seeing the most winds are constructed for 120-130mph, which this storm isnt close to exceeding. The storm surge is going to be the killer here (as it is during most hurricanes). Couple the oversaturated soils with the high winds and your footings are not going to have as much stability as they were intended. Plus shallow rooted trees, common around the coast, will fall over
10/29/2012 1:57:27 PM
tambopoline!!!
10/29/2012 2:03:06 PM
Again, it's not the wind that impresses me as much as the ability of the glass/door in that picture to withstand the water pressure. Ever seen how thick the glass is at an Aquarium?
