as long as you keep the thing watered, it's perfectly safewe have a real tree. it's 2 or 3 feet tall. delivered to my door straight from the mountains already squared up in a plastic bowl thing. open box, remove tree, place on table, let wife decorate. love it.

Let it dry out really well before you apply any type of sealant or lacquer to it.

There is a shop in Blowing Rock that has a local artist that takes reservations each year to carve your Christmas tree stump into a keepsake carving. We haven't been in the past couple of years, but I think it is the Christmas in Blowing Rock store http://www.aperfectpresent.com/catalog/index.php, but I can't find anything about it on their website.
