Or a warlord's wife, but from what I've heard, warlords don't make the best husbands Genghis Khan didn't father 10,000,000,000 children by being faithful!

I'll just set up a deer stand and take potshots at intruders. I'll become a mini little redneck warlord.

3 months living expenses (not income, but expenses--to include debt payments, if any, etc) is considered the minimum. Some recommend 6 months. I think that maybe there's a case for that if your job security is poor or your income is not very consistent. I'd make sure you have 3 months before you worry about other saving/investing, and then slowly work your way up to 6 months while putting other money away into an IRA, 401k, etc.[Edited on January 6, 2013 at 11:04 AM. Everytime I read a book about shit getting bad (post World Wars and such)...cigarettes become very valuable. So instead of buying gold, I have an attic full of Camel Lights, Menthols, and Marlboro Reds.

I'm too conservative with our emergency savings and I know it but oh well. Been that way since we bought our house 3 years ago. I have 6 months in our money market account and then 12 months in CDs that I could get into with a small penalty (less than what we have earned at this point) if needed. The rest is invested though.

I feel weird keeping more than 10k in my checking. But I feel even weirder if it drops below 5k.

^^ Well A Roth IRA grows tax-free; it is NOT tax deferred (although they didn't specify Roth) so I don't see a reason not to take advantage of that. And with the 401ks it just depends on who your company uses I guess. Though we do have managed accounts as an option (which all earned double digits last year) we also have a pretty wide variety of stuff to invest in as well as individual stocks available to us.

^ and you can invest in pretty much whatever you want with an IRA.(And regarding 401k, do you beat the managed account plus the company match without taking on far disproportionate risk? I doubt it.)

fwiw you can purchase bullion at lower increments that straight up bricksa weird opportunity arose several years ago that led me into researching the feasibility of a sack full of 1oz bullion bars.
